BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana track and field closed the first day of the Midwest Classic at the Fall Creek Pavilion and Meyo Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center on Friday (January 31) with two event wins and many personal bests on the day.
"It was great to see a few people take some very good steps forward," said assistant coach Mike Erb. "Our throws group had several personal bests and Taylor (Schoonveld) really put it together in the high jump. The sprint group continued their success with several coming back in the finals tomorrow.
"It was a solid day one, and we hope to continue the momentum tomorrow."
The day started with the women's weight throw where Hannah Alexander (19.64m/64-5.25) set a new personal best with her fourth-straight performance of over 19 meters. Bridget Beyer also had a great showing, posting a career long 18.94m/62-1.75 to finish sixth in the event.
The Hoosiers also had a pair of top-5 performances on the men's side. Hunter Smith (19.38m/63-7) and Tyler Reyna (19.01m/62-4.5) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the event.
The field events also saw Vince Davero earn the first win of the weekend for the Hoosiers in the long jump with a leap of 7.40m/24-3.5. Kelly Moran (5.82m/19-1.25) finished third in the women's long jump and Taylor Schoonveld finished second in the women's high jump with a new personal best (1.76m/5-9.25).
On the track, Indiana saw multiple athletes qualify for tomorrow's finals events.
Olivia Gee earned a spot in the women's 60-meter hurdles, while Tamer Saleh (6.79), Christian Woodson (6.95), and Dezmone Starks (7.08) all qualified for the men's 60-meter finals.
At the Meyo Invitational, Tony Provenzano and Dylon Nalley (14:14.67; PR) finished sixth and seventh, respectively in the men's 5000-meter run final.
