BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a tough opening weekend in Arizona, the Indiana Baseball team (0-4) will look for a big bounce back at the USA Baseball Round Robin event in Cary, N.C. IU will play a trio of games against Fordham (Feb. 22), Harvard (Feb. 23) and Northwestern (Feb. 24). The Hoosiers will finish off a stretch of four games in four days with a rematch against Xavier (Feb. 25) in their home opener.
Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley got off to a fantastic start in his college career last weekend. He leads the team with six hits and a .353 batting average. He picked up the first three-hit day of his campaign against UNLV on Monday (Feb. 17) afternoon.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Cole Gilley led a new look pitching staff with a career high 11 strikeouts against Xavier last Saturday (Feb. 15) evening. He helped spark a 21-strikeout effort for the Hoosiers, tying the most in a single game since at least 2005. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry had six of his own in the same contest.
The Hoosiers will look to get the bats going this weekend. Juniors Devin Taylor and Tyler Cerny, and sophomore Jasen Oliver, are all hitting under .300 but have shown flashes of getting back on track. Cerny and Oliver each hit home runs on opening weekend and are set to respond nicely in Cary.

HANLEY HITS: Freshman first baseman Jake Hanley got straight to work last weekend. He racked up six hits in his first four games and owns a four-game hitting streak to begin his college career. Hanley picked up the first three-hit day of his career against UNLV (Feb. 17).
GILLEY DAZZLES: Graduate student pitcher Cole Gilley was phenomenal in his IU debut last Saturday (Feb. 15) against Xavier. He racked up 11 strikeouts, the most of any IU pitcher on opening weekend since at least 2005. It was the most in a non-conference game since 2023 (13 - Luke Sinnard).
BIG-HIT JOLLY: Sophomore second baseman Jasen Oliver hit a game-tying three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday (Feb. 15). It was the fourth career go-ahead or game-tying home run of his career. Three of the four have been three-run home runs.
DICKERSON STEPS UP: Redshirt sophomore center fielder Korbyn Dickerson made his IU debut this past weekend with starts in all four games. He hit .333 (5-15) and hit the first home run of his career on Monday (2/17). He reached base nine times in total on the weekend.
PUNCH 'EM OUT: As a pitching staff, Indiana racked up 21 strikeouts in the contest against Xavier last Saturday (Feb. 15). Gilley was responsible for 11 of them himself. It matches the most strikeouts in a single game for IU since at least the 2005 season.
BIG DEBUTS: There were six true freshmen that made their collegiate debuts this past weekend. Hanley and outfielder Hogan Denny started all four. Infielder Will Moore collected the first hit of his career on Monday (Feb. 17). Third baseman Cooper Malamazian appeared in all four games.

Fordham (0-3, 0-0 Atlantic 10)
• The Rams opened up their season with a top-20 showdown at NC State. All three games ended in run-rule defeats but provided valuable reps for the program. Fordham will play its first game of the weekend on Friday vs. Harvard before meeting Indiana on Saturday evening.
• Senior outfielder Cian Sahler and junior utilityman Daniel Bucciero lead the way with a .333 batting average. The pair of bats each provided three hits in the opening weekend series in Raleigh. Sophomore infielder Matt Dieguez hit a home run on Sunday against NC State.
• Senior pitcher Robbie Stewart will get the start against the Hoosiers on Saturday. He pitched just 1.2 innings on opening weekend and carries a 5.40 earned run average.
Harvard (0-0, 0-0 Ivy League)
• Harvard didn't play on opening weekend and will make its season debut at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary. The Crimson play Fordham and Northwestern first before playing IU on Sunday morning.
• Senior infielder William Lybrook returns after putting up seven home runs in 2024. He slashed .340/.617/1.030 and racked up 25 RBIs. He played in just 27 games but returns as the premier bat in the Harvard lineup.
• Callan Fang is the D1 Baseball Preseason Pitcher of the Year with a fastball that reaches 95 miles per hour. He was last summer's Cape Cod League Pitcher of the Year. IU will face sophomore Andrew Abler who sits in the high-80's with a handful of off-speed pitches.
Northwestern (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten)
• IU will meet longtime rival Northwestern in a non-conference, neutral site matchup on Monday morning. The Wildcats took two of three at Long Beach State to begin the season. Northwestern head coach Ben Greenspan played baseball at Indiana and was an assistant coach from 2009-2014 in Bloomington.
• Graduate utilityman Tyler Ganus hit a scorching .545 (6-11) against the Dirtbags on opening weekend. He drove in five RBIs and reached base nine times. Sophomore infielder Ryan Kucherak hits .364 and leads the team with four runs scored.
• On the mound, the Wildcats got a big boost from freshman pitcher Matthew Kouser. He threw six innings of one-run ball enroute to being named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. He scattered just two hits and helped Northwestern to a 6-2 win in the middle game of the weekend.
Xavier (2-2, 0-0 Big East)
• The Musketeers picked up a pair of wins on opening weekend, including an 8-6 extra innings victory over the Hoosiers at the Sanderson Ford Collegiate Baseball Classic. IU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with a three-run home run from sophomore second baseman Jasen Oliver. Xavier got the lead back in the tenth and held off the Hoosiers for the win.
• Sophomore infielder Jake Lambdin hit .545 across four games on opening weekend. He collected six hits and three RBIs and scored five runs. He reached base 10 times and didn't strikeout in 11 at-bats. Senior outfielder Carter Hendrickson added five hits and five RBIs.
• Redshirt freshman right-hander Ryan Piech threw against IU on opening weekend. The Musketeers have yet to play a midweek contest but could see a long rotation of pitchers throw against the Hoosiers at Bart Kaufman Field.
• Former IU right-handed pitcher Evan Whiteaker transferred to Xavier after last season. Coming to Bloomington was longtime designated hitter Tyler DeMartino who is playing his sixth season of college baseball in total and his first for the Hoosiers.

• These two teams have met just once before; an 8-2 Indiana win at a neutral field in 1987. The last Atlantic 10 opponent the Hoosiers played was George Mason (W, 9-3) in 2024.
Harvard
• It will be nearly 88 full years between meetings with Indiana and Harvard. The two sides last played in June of 1937 with the Hoosiers winning 5-3. The last Ivy League team that IU played was Dartmouth (W, 8-6) in 2015.
Northwestern
• These two teams will meet in a neutral site contest for the first time since a 2010 Big Ten Tournament game in Columbus, Ohio. It's the first one-off game between the sides since 1983. Northwestern is one of three division one schools (Ohio State, Purdue) that IU holds over 100 all-time wins against.
• The two teams first played in 1895 - the first year of baseball in program history. Grad student right-handed pitcher Ben Grable spent three years at Northwestern and pitched against the Hoosiers in the 2023 series in Evanston.
