BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana Baseball team (20-16, 10-8 B1G) will begin a busy week at Bart Kaufman Field with a midweek contest on Tuesday (April 15) against Indiana State. It's the first of four games set to be played in Bloomington through the end of this week. Maryland will visit for a three-game set beginning Friday (April 18).

The Hoosiers are coming off a busy six-game weekend that saw them finish 4-2 with a series sweep over Michigan State and a weekend loss to Illinois. In between those games, IU won a hard-fought midweek game over Ball State at Bart Kaufman Field.

The rubber match defeats to USC and Illinois will inflate the numbers a bit but the pitching has been quite good for the Hoosiers in the last 10 games. In fact, since April began, IU has given up more than four earned runs in a game just one time. In seven games played between April 1st and April 12th, the IU pitching staff had allowed five-or-fewer earned runs in every contest.

At times, IU has struggled to put complete performances together in all facets of the game. Saturday's (April 12) win over Illinois was a far cry from those issues. IU won a commanding 12-3 contest with the bats, pitching and defense all coming to play. That is the kind've performance that head coach Jeff Mercer will be searching for in the final five weeks of the regular season.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jackson Yarberry will get the start again in the midweek as he continues his return to play following a month-long absence through injury. Veteran southpaw Deron Swanson didn't pitch over the weekend and will likely eat some innings against the Sycamores.

First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Bart Kaufman Field. The game will be streamed on B1G+ with Kevin Vera, Zion Brown and Kara Adams on the call. Austin Render will have the radio call on whcc105.com/iuhoosiers.com.

Leading Off
RECORD WATCH: Junior outfielder Devin Taylor is closing in on Hoosier history over the next couple of weeks. He needs two home runs to break the program's all-time home run record. He recorded his 200th hit of his career over the weekend - the 25th player to do so in program history.

MIDWEEK SWANSON: Senior southpaw Deron Swanson has been good in limited appearances this season. He has a 3.97 ERA and had a scoreless outing of 4.1 innings last week against Ball State. He threw 3.0 innings in a win over Indiana State back in March.

GETS ON BASE: Freshman third baseman Will Moore has been an on-base machine for the Hoosiers. He's fifth in the Big Ten among qualified hitters with a .505 on-base percentage and has 22 hits, 20 walks and eight hit-by-pitches in his debut season in Bloomington.

PROLIFIC PITCHING: Senior lefty Ryan Kraft will move into the top-5 in program history in appearances with his next outing on the mound. It might come Tuesday as a designated bullpen, which would give him 76 for his career in Bloomington.

HOGAN HEATIN' UP: Freshman outfielder Hogan Denny caught fire in the weekend series at Illinois. He finished the three-game set with a .625 batting average, a home run and four RBIs. He came off the bench on Friday before getting starts on Saturday and Sunday.

KOSKIE'S BIG WEEK: Freshman outfielder Caleb Koskie got his first start of his career last Monday and turned it into a stellar week. He went 6-for-18 (.333) with five runs scored, three doubles and nine RBIs. His first career hit was a grand slam against Michigan State (April 7).

Scouting the Opponent
Indiana State
• These two teams will meet for the second time this season after IU won the matchup in Terre Haute, 9-4. Indiana State is coming off a series win over Southern Illinois and beat Purdue on the road in the midweek last Tuesday in West Lafayette. The Sycamores are 18-17 overall and 7-5 in the Missouri Valley.

• Senior utilityman Carlos Pena, a transfer from Missouri, is the heavy hitter in the Indiana State lineup. He's hitting .370 on the season and has a hit in eight-consecutive contests. He's also got the team leads with 11 home runs this year. Redshirt senior Keegan Garris is second with nine long balls.

• The strength of Indiana State has been on the mound through this season. Senior right-handed pitcher Breyllin Suriel was a thorn in the side of IU batters the first time these two teams met. The Hoosiers are likely to avoid him on Tuesday but will have to deal with fellow senior right-hander Jacob Spencer. He's got a 9.64 ERA this season.
