All Hoosiers, All Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Head coach Jeff Mercer and the Indiana Baseball team (18-14, 9-6 B1G) played one of the most complete days of baseball in his tenure, sweeping a doubleheader and the weekend series against Michigan State on Monday (April 7) at Bart Kaufman Field.
The Hoosiers outscored their visitors from the north by 28 runs in two games on Monday, winning a pair of run-rule contests - 14-2 and 18-2 respectively. IU's pitching staff allowed just eight runs (seven earned) on the weekend while using only eight pitchers to complete the 23 innings.
IU hit .427 (41-96) as a team in three wins over the Spartans, scoring 38 runs on its home field. Amazingly, only 11 of IU's 41 base hits went for extra bases. Five different players hit home runs on Monday, capped by a two-run blast from redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson.
Dickerson and junior outfielder Devin Taylor combined to go 14-26 (.538) in the series with two doubles, one home run, 11 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Five different starters (Taylor, Dickerson, Tyler Cerny, Will Moore and Jake Hanley) hit at least .500 on the weekend.
The biggest win of the weekend was getting through three games in 24+ hours without overusing any of its primary arms. Nobody on IU's pitching staff threw more than 85 pitches and only one pitcher (Seebold – 82) needed more than 50 in their outing. The Hoosiers only allowed four walks and one home run in the 23 innings on the bump.
It's a quick turnaround on the diamond due to the weather over the past week. IU hosts a midweek contest with Ball State tomorrow evening (April 7) at Bart Kaufman Field. The Hoosiers are expected to staff through the nine innings with sophomore right-hander Jackson Yarberry and senior southpaw Deron Swanson set to open the contest.
Game 1: Indiana 14, Michigan State 2 (F/7)
Recap – Game 1
The Indiana Baseball team (17-14, 8-6 B1G) picked up its third Big Ten run-rule victory of the season with a swift 14-2 victory over Michigan State. IU pounded out 15 hits including three each from freshman first baseman Jake Hanley and redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson.
IU scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back. The home team scored in four separate innings and put up three different crooked numbers. Dickerson and Hanley were responsible for driving in three runs each while redshirt sophomore designated hitter Joey Brenczewski and freshman shortstop Cooper Malamazian each had multi-RBI efforts.
Graduate student pitchers Ben Grable and Cole Gilley (W, 6-1) needed just 90 pitches to complete seven innings on the mound. Grable allowed one run through three frames while Gilley recorded the final 12 outs of the game.
Michigan State pieced together just five hits and two runs. Gilley kept the visitors in check with five strikeouts across four innings. He picked up his sixth win of the season and needed just 48 pitches to handle business in the first game of the doubleheader.
Game 2: Indiana 18, Michigan State 2 (F/7)
Recap – Game 2
There was no second game slump on Monday as the Indiana Baseball team (18-14, 9-6 B1G) finished off a commanding sweep of Michigan State with a 18-2 (F/7) win in game two of the doubleheader. IU scored in all six innings it came to the plate and hung crooked numbers in five of them.
Freshman outfielder Caleb Koskie – making his first career start – hit a grand slam in the first inning to kick off the fireworks. That was both his first collegiate hit and first collegiate home run. His fellow freshman counterpart – third baseman Will Moore – homered later in the game.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Korbyn Dickerson had four hits in game two and seven overall in the doubleheader. He was one of four players with multi-RBI efforts, led by the six from Koskie. IU started five true freshmen in its offensive lineup and got six in total to the plate to bat.
Redshirt junior lefty Grant Holderfield (W, 2-0) got five outs – three via strikeout – to get out of a jam and move the ball along. Junior right-handed pitcher Aydan Decker-Petty (SV, 1) got the final nine outs in one of his best outings of the season. IU used just five pitchers to cover 14 innings on Monday and eight total pitchers on the weekend.
IU's emphatic three-game sweep of the Spartans keeps it on pace at the top of the Big Ten standings. The Hoosiers are just a half game out of one of the coveted top-four spots in the league table. At the halfway point in the conference schedule, IU holds a 9-6 record and will head to Illinois next weekend.
Inside the Box Score – Game 1
• Indiana outhit Michigan State 15-5 and outscored the visitors 14-2.
• The Hoosiers didn't walk a single batter in the game.
• Three players had at least three hits for IU.
• Neither pitcher for IU threw more than 50 pitches.
Inside the Box Score – Game 2
• IU scored 18 runs but only needed 14 hits to do so.
• The Hoosiers mashed four home runs and got hit by three pitches.
• The top seven batters in IU's lineup all scored at least twice.
• True freshmen had over half (10) of IU's RBIs.
Notes to Know – Both Games
• The Hoosiers picked up the 10th Big Ten sweep (at least three games) in head coach Jeff Mercer's tenure in Bloomington. It's the second conference series sweep of the season (Ohio State) and the sixth over the last three seasons. This is the fourth time (2019, 2021, 2023) that IU has swept a Big Ten home weekend on multiple occasions in the same season under the skipper.
• Junior shortstop Tyler Cerny was hit by three pitches during the doubleheader on Monday. He moved into a tie for first in program history with 38 hit-by-pitches, joining Chris Hervey (2006-09) at the top of the record books. In his career, the veteran has just one more walk (39) than hit-by-pitch (38) – one of the stranger stat lines in IU baseball history.
• Freshman outfielder Caleb Koskie and freshman third baseman Will Moore each hit their first career home runs in the second game of Monday's doubleheader. They became the 49th and 50th unique players respectively to hit home runs for the Hoosiers since Mercer took over ahead of the 2019 season. There have been 14 different players go yard this season.
• Koskie added his name to a growing list of young players in the second game of the doubleheader. He became the sixth IU freshman since 2019 with at least six RBIs in one game. His first-year counterpart, Cooper Malamazian, did so as well in a win over Bellarmine (March 25). It's the second-straight year that multiple freshmen have done so.
• IU dominated the weekend over Michigan State. The home team outscored its competition by 30 runs (38-8) in a brilliant offensive performance at Bart Kaufman Field. It's the third time in the Mercer era that IU has had a run differential of at least 30 runs in a Big Ten sweep (+35 – Purdue, May 2023 & +34 – Minnesota, April 2021).
• Junior outfielder Devin Taylor inched closer to an all-time mark this weekend. He picked up six base hits in three games, taking his career tally to 197. He needs three hits in Tuesday's contest with Ball State to reach 200 on his home field. If not, he's more than likely to reach the threshold in this weekend's series with Illinois.
• Albeit being just a seven-inning game, IU's duo of graduate students Ben Grable and Cole Gilley didn't allow a walk in game one of the doubleheader. It is the first time this year that the Hoosiers have gone without giving up a walk and the first time doing so overall since 2024 (vs. Butler – March 29).
