Missed Opportunities Cost Chance at Sweep

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Indiana Baseball team (31-23, 16-14 B1G) left the bases loaded in three-straight innings on Saturday (May 17) afternoon, missing key opportunities to cut into the early deficit. The Hoosiers could never find the clutch hit with runners in scoring position, falling to Michigan, 8-3, in the regular season finale.
IU found itself behind for the first time all weekend after Michigan scored five runs in the first two innings. The home team wouldn't score again until the seventh inning after IU's pitching staff posted four-straight zeros but IU could only muster two runs – both scored in the fifth – in the meanwhile.
Junior outfielder Devin Taylor grounded into a double play with the bases juiced in the third but responded nicely with a RBI single and solo home run later in the game. Sophomore outfielder Andrew Wiggins had the only other multi-hit game for the Hoosiers. Freshman third baseman Will Moore reached safely three times.
Pitching coach Dustin Glant wanted to ensure that IU is lined up for Tuesday's game in the Big Ten Tournament and elected to hold high-leverage arms out of the ballgame. Freshman southpaw Brayton Thomas had the best outing of any IU pitcher, tossing two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Senior lefty Deron Swanson (L, 2-2) got the start but allowed five hits and four runs.
A loss from Rutgers on the east coast ensured that IU will be the No. 6 seed in next week's Big Ten Tournament in Omaha. IU finished tied in the standings with Michigan but took the tie-breaker after winning the first two games in this weekend's series.
The Hoosiers will open play at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha on Tuesday (May 20) against the No. 10 seed at 2:00 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network. The full bracket will be released by the conference office following the conclusion of games in Los Angeles and Seattle.
