Hoosier Wrestling to Face No. 1 Penn State & Michigan State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ––– No. 25 Indiana will have a packed weekend with two Big Ten duals on the docket. The Hoosiers will face No. 1 Penn State in Happy Valley on Friday at 7 p.m. and host Michigan State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Wilkinson Hall.
Indiana enters the dual at 6-2 (1-1) while Penn State is 9-0 (3-0) and Michigan State is 3-4 (0-3).
MARYLAND REWIND:
-Indiana picked up its first Big Ten win of the season on Sunday when it defeated Maryland 26-12 at Wilkinson Hall.
-The win put Indiana at 1-1 in Big Ten duals after dropping their first conference match at No. 2 Ohio State. The Hoosiers are 6-2 overall.
-Indiana won six of 10 bouts in the match, but in each of the four dropped bouts the results were only decisions.
-Bryce Lowery picked up his first career pin when he stuck Michael Pizzuto.
-No. 11 Jacob Moran defeated Presden Sanchez by tech fall to improve to 10-1 on the season.
-No. 25 Henry Porter picked up his second win of the season against Dario Lemus in his 15-7 major decision win. He previously defeated Lemus by decision, 2-0, at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic.
PENN STATE PREVIEW:
-Indiana and Penn State will face off on Friday night at 7 p.m. in Rec Hall in University Park, Pa.
-The Penn State Nittany Lions are once again the No. 1 team in the country after winning their fourth-straight national championship last season.
-The Nittany Lions return six starters from last year's team and all of their starters are ranked in the top 12 at their respective weight classes.
-Mitchell Mesenbrink (165) and Levi Haines (174) each have won an NCAA Championship before. Mesenbrink won in 2025 and Haines won at 157 lbs. in 2024.
-The Nittany Lions are 9-0 to this point in their dual schedule and 3-0 in the Big Ten. Their Big Ten wins include dominant victories against Rutgers (46-0) at home and road wins at Iowa (32-3) and Northwestern (51-0).
SPARTANS CLASH:
-Indiana and Michigan State will wrestle on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Wilkinson Hall. This will be the sixth consecutive season that the two programs compete against each other.
-Indiana has won two matches in a row against the Spartans, including a dominant 35-3 win in East Lansing last year and a thrilling 23-18 win in Bloomington in 2024.
-Michigan State enters the dual with a 3-4 record and an 0-2 mark in the Big Ten. The Spartans own wins over LIU, Gardner-Webb and The Citadel.
-Their losses include matches with Rider and American while the Big Ten losses have come to Michigan and Illinois.
-Michigan State is led by No. 30 Caleb Weiand (133), No. 27 Kael Wisler (197) and No. 27 Max Vanadia (285).
-Head Coach Roger Chandler is an Indiana alum and had a very accomplished career in Bloomington.
-Chandler won a Big Ten Championship at 142 lbs. and was an NCAA finalist in 1997. He was also a three-time NCAA qualifier and All-American (1995-97).
LINEUP CONTINUITY:
-Indiana's routine dual lineup consists of seven Hoosiers who made multiple starts at that weight class in 2024-25.
-Jacob Moran (125), Henry Porter (141), Tyler Lillard (165), Derek Gilcher (174) and Gabe Sollars (197) each are in at least their third season as a starter.
