BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 14-ranked Indiana opened its season with two racing sessions on the first day of the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational Saturday (March 14) on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Indiana's top boat, the Varsity Eight, won its first race of the season ahead of North Carolina and Notre Dame. The Hoosiers finished in 6:37.095, just in front of the Tar Heels (6:38.575) and with open water over the Fighting Irish (6:50.159).
IU's Third Varsity Eight earned a 2-2 head-to-head victory on the day. In their first race, the Hoosiers finished in 7:07.695 to place second and on the right side of a photo finish with Notre Dame (7:07.717). In the afternoon, the crew had a great battle with No. 19 Duke and No. 24 Oklahoma. Duke placed first in 6:59.076, 4.474 seconds in front of IU's runner-up finish (7:03.550), but the Hoosiers would finish 5.545 seconds ahead of the Sooners.
Indiana's opening weekend regatta concludes Sunday morning with one session. The Hoosiers are scheduled to hit the water at 10:24 a.m. ET.
