No. 23 Indiana Through Day One at Big Ten Invite
4/18/2026 9:18:00 PM | Women's Rowing
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – No. 23 Indiana rowing battled through two sessions of racing Saturday (April 18), the first of two days at the Big Ten Invitational on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, California.
Indiana posted a solid morning, as four of its six boats took second place finishes in four-boat races. In the morning's Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four races, IU only trailed No. 9-ranked Cal and outpaced both Minnesota and Washington State. Both the 2V8 and V4 crews showed great closing speed to hold off late charges from the Golden Gophers, the latter getting the better of a photo finish by seven tenths.
Indiana's 3V8 crew had perhaps the race of the day for the program with its own second place finish in the morning. The Hoosiers rallied late in the race to gain touch with the No. 5-ranked Washington crew, and they maintained it through the finish line. The Huskies won in a time of 6:42.321, just 2.6 ahead of IU's boat. That battle gave Indiana a significant length of water ahead of the next two boats, finishing nearly 11 seconds ahead of Wisconsin (6:55.634) and nearly 25 seconds in front of Michigan State (7:09.754).
The afternoon proved a greater challenge for IU's crews, as the top four crews raced in five-boat heats that included No. 1-ranked Stanford, No. 12 Rutgers, Oregon State and Iowa. Indiana finished fourth, beating Iowa in each race.
The Hoosiers will rest and recover for one more session Sunday. Indiana will set out 11:32 a.m. ET, starting with the 2V4.
