Ashley Williams is in her third season as an assistant coach with the Indiana Women’s Basketball team in 2022-23.
The 2021-22 Hoosiers continued its upward trajectory as it finished with an overall record of 24-9 and second-straight NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance. The Hoosiers advanced it its first Big Ten Tournament championship game in 20 years and earned its highest ever seed in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 3 seed while hosting first and second games in Bloomington. Indiana also spent the entire 2021-22 season ranked in the Top 25 national polls rising as high as No. 4 in the Associated Press and No. 5 in the USA Today/WBCA coaches poll. Her development of IU guards included the program’s leading scorer in Grace Berger and Ali Patberg – who both earned All-Big Ten honors.
Williams returned to the program in the 2020-21 season where it reached the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history. Indiana went on to finish 21-6 overall for its sixth-consecutive 20-win season and won a program record 16 games in Big Ten play to finish second overall in the conference, its highest regular season finish in school history. She helps guide the program’s guards and helped lead senior guard Ali Patberg and junior guard Grace Berger to All-Big Ten honors in 2020-21. The program also spent every week of the 2020-21 season in the Top 25 and finished a program-high No. 12 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the coaches poll.
She was selected as one of the WBCA’s Thirty Under 30 in 2020-21 which honors the nation’s top up-and-coming women’s basketball coaches under the age of 30 who have exemplified their involvement in community service, mentorship and impact on others, professional manner, and attitude and professional association involvement. The Cary, NC native is heavily involved in team scouts and has expanded IU's recruiting base in North Carolina and the southeast United States.
Williams served as an assistant coach at Furman in the 2019-20 season after she completed her two-year graduate manager role at Indiana (2017-19). In her only season with the Paladins, the program finished 19-12 overall and 8-6 in SoCon play for a fourth-place finish in the league. She was instrumental in the development of Furman’s guards including working closely with Le’Jzae Davidson, who left as the program’s third all-time leading scorer and SoCon First Team selection Tierra Hodges. In addition, Williams was heavily involved in recruiting and scouting reports.
At Indiana, Williams played a key role in the Hoosiers winning the 2018 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and making the NCAA Round of 32 in 2018-19. Prior to beginning her coaching tenure at Indiana, she enjoyed a four-year career at N.C. State,
In addition to her work on the court, Williams was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2016, was twice tabbed CoSIDA Academic All-District, and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team / All-ACC Honor Roll three times.
She graduated from N.C. State with a 3.9 GPA in industrial engineering and has her master’s degree from Indiana in athletic administration.
