The 2015-16 season marks the first at Indiana for Steve Perry, who is the Director of Operations for the Hoosiers. He comes to IU after spending the 2014-15 season as an assistant coach for the men's heavyweight rowing team at Cornell. Prior to that, he had served as a women's assistant coach at George Washington (2014) and the women's lightweight head coach at Navy (2009-13) and Dartmouth (2005-09).
During his time as head coach at Navy, he guided the varsity four to the 2012 IRA National Championship and the varsity eight to a runner-up finish in 2010. In his first year as head coach at Navy in 2010, he led the varsity crew to a record of 6-2 and claimed the Johnson Cup (vs. Yale) and Callow Trophy (vs. Penn).
At Dartmouth, Perry was the head coach and helped the Big Green to a 15-7 record while being named Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Coach of the Year after his first varsity boat won the Ivy League crown as well as the Eastern Sprints Championship. The crew would go on to finish fourth at the IRA National Championship.
Perry also spent three years as an assistant coach with the lightweight program at Navy prior to joining the Dartmouth program. Iin those three years, he guided the novice crew to a 33-1 record and helped them to first place finishes at the Eastern Sprints Championships in 2003 and 2005.
In addition, Perry spent two years at Rutgers (2000-01) and one year at Penn (2002) as a lightweight assistant coach.
He also has experience as a national team coach, having worked with the United States U-23 Women's National Rowing Team in 2008 and 2009. In 2008, his work as the assistant sweep coach helped the U.S. to a gold medal at the U-23 World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany. The following year, he was named head sweep rowing coach and earned a silver medal at the U-23 World Championships in the Czech Republic.
A 2001 graduate of Rutgers University, where he rowed all four seasons with the lightweight team, he served as captain in 1999.
