Mike Regan joined the Indiana Women’s Soccer staff on Jan. 19, 2016 after four seasons as an assistant coach at Drake University.
Regan’s primary focus at Indiana is on the team’s overall technical development and offensive execution, with a specialty in the area of set pieces.
In 2017, the Hoosier offense was led by career seasons from junior Maya Piper and sophomore Chandra Davidson. Piper netted seven goals and added a pair of assists, while Davidson added six goals with two assists. Three of Davidson’s scores came as gamewinners – against Western Michigan, Vanderbilt and Michigan State. Redshirt junior Mykayla Brown led the team is assists with a career-best four, three of which were on game-winning goals.
The Hoosiers’ campaign was highlighted by a 4-3-1 non-conference slate that included three shutouts. Indiana’s 1-0 victory at No. 23 SMU on Sept. 8 was the first over a ranked opponent for the Hoosiers since 2010. A 4-0 offensive outburst at Western Michigan on Aug. 28 was the most goals scored in a game since 2013.
In his first season with the Hoosiers in 2016, the team finished with its best overall and conference record since 2013 as Indiana advanced to the Big Ten Tournament for the first time in three years. The Hoosiers posted their best offensive numbers since 2013, scoring 26 goals with 71 total points. Indiana’s attack was led by All-Big Ten Tournament Team honoree Mykayla Brown, who scored eight goals, including four in the final three games of the year. The Hoosiers saw five score their first career goal, while six picked up their first career assist. Freshman Meghan Scott had seven assists on the season, tied for the second most ever by an Indiana freshman.
During his time at Drake, Regan coached 22 All-Conference members, seven Missouri Valley Conference All-Tournament selections, two NSCAA All-Region picks, as well as a MVC Player of the Year, a MVC Defensive Player of the Year and 2014 Haitian National Team member Generve Charles.
Last season, Regan and the Bulldog staff were named the 2015 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding Drake to its first regular season conference championship since 2006.
The Bulldogs advanced to the MVC tournament semifinals in each of his last three seasons, with the 2013 appearance marking the first since 2009.
Off the field, Drake earned three NSCAA College Team Academic Awards, registered the highest GPA in the athletic department in Spring 2013 and had five MVC Scholar-Athlete selections during Regan’s tenure.
Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Regan was the head coach of the North Iowa Area Community College Men’s Soccer team, where he led the program to a 74-17-6 record in five seasons. Three times named the NJCAA/ICCAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year, Regan led the Trojans to a No. 11 final spot in the 2011 NSCAA/adidas National Rankings, a season which saw the team win a conference title and earn a spot as a NJCAA Region 11 finalist for the third time in four years.
In his five seasons at the helm, Regan coached four NJCAA All-Americans, 41 All-Region selections and 35 NJCAA All-Academic honorees.
At the youth level, Regan is currently a staff coach with U.S. Youth Soccer Region II Girls ODP Program. He previously served as the head coach of the Iowa ODP ’98 age group, where he led the team to the National Tournament in 2015. Additionally, he holds a National “A” Coaching License from the United States Soccer Federation.
Prior to moving to the United States, Regan had an extensive playing career in England that included a number of professional league clubs as a youth player and semi-professional stops at Staines Town FC and a role as team captain for the Ottawa Fury.
Regan earned a bachelor’s degree in Wellness from Waldorf College in 2009 and a master’s degree in Sport Management in 2011 from California University of Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Maradee, have two sons, Kieran (6) and Liam (4).
