Matt Bowe enters his second season with the Hoosiers in 2017-18. Bowe will serve as an assistant swimming coach for both the Indiana men's and women's teams.
In 2016-17, the Indiana men claimed the program’s 25th Big Ten Championship, going wire-to-wire to earn the title. For the week, IU won a total of 19 medals – 12 gold, five silver and two bronze. Indiana also won four of the five relays at the Big Ten Championships, marking the first time in program history the team accomplished that impressive feat.
At the 2017 NCAA Championships, the Hoosiers placed seventh overall – the best finish for the team since 1979. The 229.5 points are the most for IU since scoring 274 in 1975. The top-10 finish for the Hoosiers at the NCAA Championships is the fifth in the last six years. For the second-straight season, Indiana finished as the top Big Ten team at the NCAA Championships – the best stretch for IU since accomplishing the feat for 15-straight seasons from 1964-78.
Over the course of the meet, the Hoosiers had 13 individuals earn a total of 32 All-America honors – the most in program history in 42 years since the team tallied 36 in 1975.
For the IU women, the team placed second overall at the Big Ten Championships in 2016-17. IU has placed first or second at the Big Ten Championships in each of the last nine years, winning the title three-straight times from 2009 to 2011. Over the course of the meet, IU won a total of nine medals – eight gold and one silver.
At the 2017 NCAA Championships, Indiana placed eighth overall with a total of 185 points. The eighth-place finish is the second-best in school history, while the 185 points are the second-most in school history to last season's 228.
IU was the top Big Ten finisher at the NCAA Championships for the third-straight year, as
the Hoosiers posted back-to-back top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships for the first time since accomplishing the feat three times-in-a-row from 2008-10.
At the NCAA Championships, the Hoosiers had eight individuals earn a total of 24 All-America honors, marking the sixth time in the last nine seasons that Indiana has had 20 or more All-America accolades. Lilly King led the way, defending her NCAA titles in both the 100 and 200 breastroke.
"Matt Bowe brings valuable international coaching experience to our staff,” IU head coach Ray Looze said at the time of Bowe’s hiring. “He is an exceptional technician, innovative and his on deck rapport with swimmers is off the charts. Matt will coach our sprint males and females in all four strokes. His passion for swimming, his work ethic and his high level of concern for his student-athletes minces identically with our current staff. He was just too good a fit to pass up. I look forward to Matt contributing to Indiana's pursuit of both Olympic and NCAA excellence."
Bowe comes to Bloomington from Eastern Michigan University where he served as an assistant swimming coach for the past three seasons.
At Eastern Michigan, Bowe helped coach the men’s and women’s swimming teams to a total of 11 individual MAC titles, eight MAC records and 24 school records in his three seasons on the staff. Also during his time with the Eagles, Bowe helped qualify three swimmers for the NCAA Championships, including Delaney Duncan who earned Honorable-Mention All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke.
While at EMU, Bowe helped guide the men’s squad to back-to-back MAC titles in 2015 and 2016, while the women’s team went from finishing fourth in 2014 to earning runner-up honors in both 2015 and 2016.
In 2015, Bowe served as an assistant coach for Team Europe at the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool.
Prior to joining the staff at Eastern Michigan, Bowe was a coach at Loughborough University, where he coached the US Open champion in the 200 fly, Tilly Gray. Bowe also spent time as an assistant coach at the Great Britain National Centre in Loughborough from 2009-2012, where he coached back-to-back world champion and world record holder in the 50m back, Liam Tancock, as well as two-time world silver medalist in the 100m free, Francesca Halsall.
A native of Silecroft in Cumbria, UK, Bowe had a tremendous swimming career. As a member of Team Great Britain from 2003-2009, Bowe was the British champion in the 100m fly in 2006. In that same year, he claimed podium finishes as a part of the 4x100m medley relay team, earning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and a bronze medal at the European Championships in Budapest.
Bowe was also a finalist in the 100m fly at the World University Games in Belgrade (2009) and Bangkok (2007), and swam as a finalist in the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne.
Bowe graduated from Loughborough University in 2009 with a BSc First Class Honours in Sports Science and Management. Bowe will receive his Master’s degree in Sport Management from Eastern Michigan later this summer.
