
Hoosiers Fall in Overtime at Iowa, 96-90

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Indiana University men's basketball team fell on the road at Iowa City to the Iowa Hawkeyes, 96-90 in overtime, on Tuesday night.
With the loss, Indiana moved to 15-13 on the season overall and to 5-10 in Big Ten, while Iowa improves to 15-13 on the year and to 7-8 in league play.
Robert Johnson led for Hoosiers in double-figures, scoring a team-high 19 points to go with six rebounds, seven assists and five steals. Thomas Bryant recorded his seventh double-double of the season, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with four assists and four blocks.
James Blackmon Jr. scored 18 for the Hoosiers, while Josh Newkirk had 11 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Indiana came out on fire Tuesday night, running out to a 17-4 lead after just six minutes of play thanks in large part to Newkirk, who scored nine points in the run. Blackmon, Jr. had five in the stretch for IU, while Johnson had three.
The Hawkeyes battled back, however, tying the game for the first time with 5:16 remaining, 26-26. The last five minutes saw each team make a run – IU 7-0 and Iowa 6-0 – that ended the first half with the Hoosiers leading, 33-32.
In the second half, Indiana was able to hold the lead for the majority of the period, only to see the Hawkeyes come back from as many as nine points to take the lead with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, 73-71.
Trailing by two, 75-73, with 25 seconds remaining, Newkirk came through in the clutch for IU, hitting a pair of free throws to force overtime.
In the extra session, Indiana held the Hawkeyes to just three field goals, but Iowa was able to take advantage at the free throw line, hitting 15-of-16 from the charity stripe to earn the win, 96-90.
The Indiana Hoosiers will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 28 when the team hosts Northwestern at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
