UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The 2017 Outdoor Big Ten Championships came to a close with the men's team finishing tied for eighth. The team tallied 64 points on the weekend and tied with Michigan in the standings. The women's team scored 49 points and finished eighth.
A total of four Hoosiers scored in the 1,500m run. On the men's side, Kyle Mau led the way with a runner-up finish. The race started very strategically before the pace quickened with one lap to go. Mau was in the second pack with 300 meters to go but charged down the backstretch to claim second with a time of 3:50.23. Joe Murphy, running in his third race in as many days, captured sixth with a time of 3:51.62. For the women's team, Katherine Receveur led for the first two laps of the race. She ended third with a time of 4:23.52. Brenna Calder stormed from the back in the final lap to score three points with a sixth place finish.
Receveur also tried her hand in the 5,000m run. For the entire race she stuck with the seven-runner lead pack. With about 400 meters to go she made a move towards the front. With 120 meters to go a Michigan runner took off in a dead sprint, and Katherine matched her stride-for-stride. They sprinted down the final straightaway and Receveur was edged out by just .05 seconds. Her time of 16:23.29 placed her second. Calder ran in the 800m finals about an hour after finishing the 1,500m run. In her fourth race of the weekend, she took eighth place with a time of 2:08.54. Following a fifth place finish in the steeplechase last night, Jason Crist took seventh in the 5,000m run with a time of 14:26.23.
Diquis Manley, the final qualifier in the men's 400m hurdles, made the most of his time in the finals. He seemingly came out of nowhere to finish third with a time of 51.69. He improved on his placing from a season ago when he took eighth. Zach Reitzug gave the Hoosiers two scorers in the event with a fifth place finish. His time was 52.21.
Paul Galas finished seventh in the men's high jump. He passed on the opening height before clearing the next two heights on his first attempts. He cleared his final height, 2.11m (6-11), on his second attempt.
Similarly to the Indoor Championships, William Session captured seventh place honors in the 110m hurdles. He ran a wind-aided time of 13.95, his fastest time of the season.
The men's 4x100m relay team consisting of Tyler Bellaire, Treyton Harris, William Session and Markevious Roach finished seventh. Their time of 41.26 was good for two points.
Those that qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary round will be back in action in about two weeks. The first round of the NCAA Championships will be held in Lexington, Ky. and will be contested from May 25-27. The top 48 athletes from each event will compete in the meet, with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
