LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following three days of intense track and field action at the NCAA East Prelims, six Hoosiers have competed their ways to Eugene, Ore. Day one saw Sydney Clute vault her way into the finals. Willie Morrison broke his own school record on his way to qualification in the shot put on day two. Finally, on the third day of action, Eric Bethea, Jason Crist, Katherine Receveur and William Session punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships.
Bethea's first jump of the afternoon was ruled a foul. He rebounded nicely, putting himself into 10th place in the second round with a leap of 15.60m (51-2.25). By the time he came back to the runway he was in 12th, right at the cutline for qualification. His final jump moved him up to 11th and secured his spot in the NCAA Championships. His mark of 15.63m (51-3.5) edged out the 12th and 13th place finishers by just one centimeter.
William Session will run in his first NCAA Championship meet in a couple of weeks. The freshman qualified based on his third place finish in the second heat of the 110m hurdle quarterfinals. His time of 13.92 is a career best and ranks eighth in school history.
Katherine Receveur finished sixth overall in the women's 5,000m run to secure a spot in the NCAA Finals. She held strong with the lead pack for the entirety of the race, never dropping out of the top 10. In the final three laps the lead pack shrunk to seven, with Receveur being the seventh. She stormed back down the homestretch to nab an at-large bid.
Jason Crist, the ultimate gamer, had one more trick up his sleeve. He ran with the trail pack for the majority of the race. With about six laps to go he started to reel in the rest of the field. With two laps left he was still on the outside looking in. He made his move with 200m left, sprinting to the finish. He crossed the line, his fist pumping, in sixth place overall. He will race for the final time in cream and crimson in Eugene at the NCAA Championships.
Bryce Millar ran a tremendous 5k, taking 12th place but missing the cut due to the automatic qualification standards. Matt Schwartzer finished 32nd to close out his Hoosier career. Maggie Allen finished 45th on the women's side.
Paul Galas finished tied for 14th in the high jump. He cleared the first two heights on his first attempt. After narrowly missing at 2.10 (6-10.75) twice, he bounced back to clear on his third attempt. Unfortunately, he was unable to clear the next bar and fell just short of the qualification mark.
Khayla Dawson owned the third best throw in the shot put among freshman competitors in her initial NCAA East Preliminary meet. Her best throw of the evening came on her first, a mark of 15.89m (52-1.75). Willie Morrison finished 35th in the men's discus throw.
Next up for the Hoosiers will be the NCAA Championships at Historic Hayward Field. The group of six athletes will compete from June 7-10.
