Girouard Named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey sophomore Ciara Girouard has been named the Big Ten Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Girouard, Indiana's scoring leader through the first two weeks of the season, had a massive scoring output that led the Hoosiers past Villanova.
Playing in front of friends, family, and former teammates less than an hour from her hometown, Girouard tore up the turf at the Conshohocken Proving Grounds with a hat trick against the hosting Villanova Wildcats. Girouard gave Indiana the lead in the 26th minute, tapping in a rebounded corner for her second goal of the season.
After senior Maddie Latino regained Indiana's 2-1 lead minutes into the second half, Girouard closed the game with the two scores Indiana needed to seal the win. The New Jerseyan one-timed a pass from Elle Hempt into the left side of the cage seven minutes after Latino scored, and she netted the game winner at minute 63 in similar fashion.
Girouard is one of several players stepping on the turf in a new position from last season, sliding back to the midfield after starting all 20 games as a freshman on the forward line. Through just two weekends, Girouard matched her total goal output (4) from last season.
This selection—Indiana's first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award in two years (Kate Barber, 10/20/15)—is Girouard's first career weekly honor. Girouard also collects the Hoosiers' first Big Ten weekly honor since Noëlle Rother scooped back to back Defensive Player of the Week awards in the 2016 season (10/11, 10/18).
At long last, the Hoosiers will make use of their home turf advantage next weekend with two home games at the IU Field Hockey Complex. The four game home stand starts with two out-of-conference foes, as Indiana squares off with Central Michigan on Friday, September 8 at 3:00 p.m. ET and against Miami on Sunday, September 10 at noon. Both games will stream live on BTN Plus at BTN2Go.com.
