Winning at Indiana University requires more than just the success of our teams and student-athletes both in the classroom and on the field. Winning requires strict adherence to academic standards and NCAA rules by our teams, and in that way, you can help. As a "representative of athletic interests," you help the Hoosiers to victory when you support them within the NCAA's guidelines. As an alum, IU staff or faculty member, person who has made a financial contribution to IU, past or present student-athlete, or a ticket purchaser to an IU athletic event, you are an "IU rep." With that title comes the opportunity to participate in the storied tradition of the Cream & Crimson, as well as the responsibility to know and abide by the rules of the NCAA.
If you know of a high school student-athlete who might be an asset to any Hoosier team, do not contact that prospect, their parents, relatives, club coaches, high school coaches or high school administrators. Instead, call the IU Department of Athletics at 812-855-1966 so the proper coach can be notified. Only an Indiana University coach may contact a prospect.
IU reps are prohibited from contacting a prospect, their relatives, legal guardians, or spouse. Whether the prospect is on or off-campus makes no difference. Whether the contact is in-person, written, electronic, or over the telephone makes no difference. Illegal contact can jeopardize the prospect's future and Indiana University's ability to win.
IU reps must also take care not to provide any extra benefit to an enrolled student-athlete or their family. Extra benefits include such things as free or reduced cost transportation, lodging, meals, clothes, and entertainment, as well as preferential loan terms and other benefits that are unavailable to the general student population.
The rules may seem strict, but even small mistakes have cost other institutions their chance to win. Schools across the country face sanctions because the NCAA's guidelines were not strictly followed, and even an inadvertent action on your part can hurt the future of a student-athlete or Indiana University.
Every member of IU athletics appreciates the support of our friends and alumni, because we know our success depends to a large extent on you. Please help us maintain our institution's reputation for winning with integrity by complying with the rules. If you have any questions or are unsure if an action falls within those rules, call a timeout and contact our Compliance Office. The staff will be happy to answer your questions or clarify any rules.
We look forward to seeing you in Cream & Crimson at many of our upcoming athletics events! Go Hoosiers!
