BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The NCAA held its annual Leadership Conference this past weekend in Rosemont, Ill., and three individuals from Indiana were in attendance. Ryan Smith of the track and field team, Jaclyn Tameris of the water polo team and Barry King, the head water polo coach spent five days participating in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program.
The conference provided NCAA student athletes with the chance to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while giving them the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, problem solving and decision making skills.
Smith said the entire experience was very valuable and he was glad to be a part of it.
"The NCAA Conference was awesome," Smith said. "I went into it not really knowing what to expect and I was amazed at how great everything went. Every athlete that attended was so driven. We all fed off of each other's motivation. I made so many great friends there from other conferences."
Some of the objectives from the conference were to learn and practice skills of exemplary leaders, discuss Division I issues and legislations and develop a team-directed action plan to promote positive changes on campus and within the conferences.
Tameris said not only did they learn a lot about these important skills, but she also learned a lot about herself.
"We did different leadership activities that I will definitely implement for myself," Tameris said. "Ryan (Smith) and I also have already made a plan of action for things we would like to discuss with Indiana Athletics. I got a lot out of this conference. It was great to learn all these skills. Now I can help enhance my own and others student-athletes experiences here at Indiana."
