BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Incoming Varsity Club Board President David Gibson is excited to take his involvement with Indiana Athletics to a new level. No stranger to IU, Gibson has earned two degrees from Indiana University and his wife (Ginny) and two children (Gayle and Cameron) are proud Hoosier alumni. The Plymouth, Ind., native will pick up where outgoing president, Ron Remak, left off and is determined to keep IU Athletics moving in the same direction.
While at Indiana, Gibson was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, serving as vice president one year and took on the role of president of Indiana's Memorial Union Board from 1963-64. After graduation, Gibson's loyalty and dedication to IU and Hoosier Athletics did not cease. Gibson sat on the executive board of the Alumni Association from 1992-95 and a member of the Indiana Memorial Union John Whittenberger Society Board from 1988-96. Additionally, Gibson is a loyal supporter of the Hoosier for Higher Education.
Professionally, Gibson is the founder and chairman of Gibson Insurance Agency, Inc., in Plymouth and South Bend, Ind.
Here is a little more about Dave Gibson in his own words:
What are your goals and philosophies as the Varsity Club Board of Directors President?
My goals are to continue the growth in financial support for Indiana University Athletics, to maintain the high standards of ethical conduct in our programs and financial support. And to continue to broaden the base of membership by developing more support from our younger alumni.
Why is supporting Indiana Athletics so important to you?
In addition to providing an opportunity for student athletes to attain a quality education, college sports provide an important link between the University and its alumni leading to long term relationships and a legacy of financial support for all areas and programs.
What aspect of Indiana Athletics are you most proud of?
The fact that our programs have a reputation for integrity and a focus on academic success for our student athletes.
What does Indiana University mean to you and your family?
Our family has a three-generation relationship with IU which encompasses ten degrees. Each major athletic event serves as a vehicle for a mini family reunion.
Why is it important that IU Athletics has and maintains a generous and loyal group of supporters?
Historically, IU has been able to fund its entire athletic scholarship costs through the generosity of its many financial supporters. While this is becoming a challenge in the current period I believe we can continue to meet this challenge as we go forward.
In order to provide our athletes with the best facilities we will be required to make major capital improvements in facilities in the near future. In order to do this our Varsity Club members and other alumni will be called upon for the major support necessary if we want to maintain the quality programs we have historically produced.
The Varsity Club is what it is today because of the leadership and vision of the many individuals who have served as board members and officers over the past years.
The fact that we have the leading financial endowment in the Big Ten is a credit to volunteers and staff who have worked so hard to make the Varsity Club the success it is today.
