BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - On a weekly basis, IUHOOSIERS.com will recognize top academic performances by Hoosier student-athletes with the IU Scholar-Athlete of the Week award. For the week ending Feb. 5, junior women's basketball player Carrie Smith earned the honor as selected by IU Athletics' Academic Services.
"We are always pleased when our student-athletes get recognized for academic accomplishments, " Indiana head women's basketball coach Sharon Versyp said. "Carrie understands what it takes to be a successful student-athlete and we hope others follow in her foot steps."
Last semester, Smith earned Alpha Beta recognition and remained on track to graduate in less than four years.
"Carrie is a student who has finally found her niche in college," academic advisor Jenn Townsend said. "After struggling the first few years to find a major that interested her, Carrie finally discovered studio arts. She has really blossomed as a student. Studio arts is an incredibly difficult major for a student-athlete to pursue because of the time commitment one must give to their sport and to their studio work. Carrie has done an awesome job of balancing both and last semester had her best GPA yet. I'm very proud of her."
