The Sampson Family: Kelvin, Karen, Lauren, and Kellen. |
What first went through your mind when Kelvin mentioned his interest in the Indiana head coaching position?
"When Kelvin first mentioned the contact concerning the Indiana job, I knew without a doubt, this opportunity was one he would be serious about. I was excited about the possibility."
What do you know about the rich IU basketball tradition?
"If you are a college basketball fan, you are aware of the tradition of Indiana University basketball. I have to admit, my own knowledge begins with the undefeated 1976 team. I do remember cheering for that team and hoping they could achieve the undefeated run. I remember watching Isiah Thomas as a freshman at Michigan State in the old fieldhouse. I remember how thrilling it was when Keith Smart hit the jumper from the wing in the 1987 championship game, and then coming with the Washington State Cougars the next year to experience Assembly Hall in person. I was impressed when we returned in 1993, that one time-out in particular was choreographed exactly the same as in 1988. It gave me goosebumps both times and that's not good when you're the visiting team!"
What are your feelings on now being a part of that tradition?
"Being a part of this great tradition is very exciting and yet very humbling. I am proud to be here and look forward to many great times ahead."
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
"My hobbies and interests have for many years centered around my family. Since I was young, I enjoyed college basketball. Thank goodness! I enjoy reading and cross-stitching relaxes me."
You and Kelvin were involved in the Norman, Okla., community. Do you plan on continuing some of those efforts in Bloomington?
"Absolutely. Kelvin and I both feel you need to give back to community. Personally, I was involved in the Norman Assistance League, a philanthropic organization, supporting many projects in the community. I look forward to finding our niche in the Bloomington community."
How has your move to Bloomington been for you and your family?
"We are in the beginning process of making the move to Bloomington. I have 12 years of memories to organize and too many pairs of shoes!"
At Coach Sampson's press conference, he said that you were high school sweethearts. Talk a little bit about your relationship.
"Kelvin and I have been married since June 16, 1979. We started dating as juniors in high school. He has a twin sister (Karen) and my only brother's name was Kelvin (deceased). We can truly say, 'I feel like I've known you all my life.'"
What has been the most exciting basketball-related experience you have been involved with?
"There have been two equally exciting basketball moments for me. One moment has to be as the clock is winding down and Oklahoma fans knew we were going to the Final Four in 2002. The other moment is the first time Kellen went into the game at OU. There is something special when your son is playing for his father. Kelvin played for his father, Mr. Ned, in high school. When Kellen went in the game, I felt a completeness."
