Indiana vs. Bradley
NCAA Tournament Second Round Match
Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium
November 28, 2007
Bradley Head Coach Jim DeRose
Opening Statement:
"We're excited, not simply about the result, but to be able to play at IU with all the history and tradition. And we competed, and that is the operative word I would like to say about our guys. When we went down a goal two minutes in against a team as talented as IU, our guys could have really been on their heels. But giving up the goal was one of our few mistakes tonight and I am really proud of the effort and the competition."
On playing with more energy in the second half:
"We actually talked about it in the locker room at halftime. For us, everything was new. Being down a goal was new; being here was new. At halftime we said, and I know this is cliché or trite, but we said there was 45 minutes left in our season. We can take losing 1-0 but we can't take not going out and saying we worked absolutely as hard as we could. The guys did a good job and Stephen (Burst) found a goal to get us back into it."
Bradley Midfielder Stephen Burst
On the goal:
"I kind of felt like a seal, I headed it so many times. It dropped to my foot and it did a little roll and took a strike and it hit the post and went in."
Bradley Goalkeeper Mike Haynes
On his eight saves:
"Indiana is a great team. Their attack is good, but we pride ourselves on our defense and keeping their best players off the scoreboard. We just had one slip-up there, and I'm glad I was there to help them out because for the most part of the season they have been carrying that back line."
Indiana Head Coach Mike Freitag
"I want to first of all commend my team for an outstanding year. It didn't end up the way we wanted, but I was proud of this team, and the way they grew as a team. I know this team will continue to grow. We'll miss Charley (Traylor) and his two North Central buddies, Chris (Monroe) and Greg (Stevning), who've had great careers here. I'm sad because I know what this team can do, but I also want to commend the Bradley Braves. They came in here and worked their tails off. What they do they do very well. They're well coached, and the kids are hungry. I give them a lot of credit. They found a way. They came out strong in their first five minutes. They found a way to fight back, so I give a lot of credit to them. Soccer is a cruel game. (Penalty kicks) is sad way to lose. I don't think anybody in the world likes (penalty kicks). We did it as a team this year. We won and we lost as a team. This team was a fun team to coach, and I look forward to coaching them as we go along and we mature."
Senior Defender Charley Traylor
On the goal that Bradley scored:
"It was just one of those instances where the ball slips through, and I think no one stepped to the ball quick enough and he was able to get a shot off. I couldn't take anything away from them. I think they're a good team. I think they capitalized a lot on restarts this year, so that is definitely a strength in their attack."
Junior Goalkeeper Chay Cain
On the goal that Bradley scored:
"You know when a ball comes into the box like that, there are a lot of guys and lot of things going on, and I think we rotated. We had a few guys around the ball, but nobody stepped and took charge. You can't make an error like that in the tournament."
