Hoosiers Garner 84 Academic All-Big Ten Certificates

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Athletics claimed 84 Academic All-Big Ten Conference selections for its 10 spring and at-large sports, the league announced on Thursday. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. A total of 944 student-athletes were honored by the conference for their accomplishments.
"We are very pleased to recognize these 84 student-athletes," Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator Grace Calhoun said. "They have mastered the balance between academics and athletics, and we applaud their accomplishments."
For the Hoosiers, the women's track and field team led the way with 16 Academic All-Big Ten selections. Rowing followed with 14 selections, while men's track and field had 11, softball 10, baseball eight, water polo (at-large) seven, women's tennis six and men's tennis and men's and women's golf four each.
Indiana had two of the league's six student-athletes with perfect GPAs in the spring and at-large sports. Women's track and field standout Jessica Gall and men's golfer Drew Allenspach both boast 4.0 averages for Indiana.
Overall, the Big Ten Conference recognized 2,018 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2006-07 academic year, the highest total in the last 13 seasons, eclipsing the previous best of 1,995 set just one year ago.
