BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second time since June of 2005, Larry Glaubinger committed $10 million to the IU Glaubinger Athletic Endowment fund to establish the Adam Herbert Scholar-Athletes. Each year, beginning with the 2007-08 academic year, a select group of student-athletes will be recognized with this distinction.
"I am pleased to make this gift in support of IU Athletics and in honor of President Adam W. Herbert," said Glaubinger. "President Herbert's dedication and loyal service to Indiana University is to be commended. Establishing the Adam Herbert Scholar-Athletes is my way of honoring our friendship, his presidency and his love of athletics. Providing opportunities for current and future IU student-athletes in the classroom and on the field is of utmost importance to me."
Herbert became the 17th president of Indiana University on August 1, 2003. As IU's leader, he has focused on laying the institutional foundations for higher levels of excellence in teaching and learning, expanded research initiatives that advance further the frontiers of knowledge and new, transformative contributions both to the economic welfare of Indiana and the well being of humanity at large.
"We are deeply grateful for Larry Glaubinger's continuing generosity to Indiana University. He is a very special friend," said Herbert. "I am particularly honored that he has established this significant endowment in my name. Larry's vision and strong support have been transformative and will pay significant future dividends by enabling Indiana University to attract more of the very best student-athletes from throughout the world. This is yet another example of how IU's supporters are laying the strong foundation the university needs to achieve even higher levels of academic and athletic excellence."
"We thank Larry for his friendship, for his belief in what we do, and for this incredible commitment," said IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan. "I echo your acknowledgement of President Herbert's service to IU and particularly to athletics. He has played a critical and vital role in making our success possible. The President has been a warrior in our fight for excellence. He has been creative and commanding, and he has been engaged in the trenches."
Glaubinger graduated from IU with distinction in 1949 and is currently the President of Lawrence Economic Consulting. He is the former chairman of Stern & Stern Industries, an industrial textiles manufacturer. He and his wife, Lucienne, have demonstrated their commitment to Indiana University through generous support of the Kelley School of Business, IU Art Museum, Wells Scholars Program, and many other areas, in addition to Athletics.
"Larry exemplifies true commitment," said Scott Dolson, Associate Athletic Director for Development and IU Varsity Club Director. "He has made it his life's work to provide scholarship opportunities to deserving students across the country at various institutions. We feel extremely fortunate and appreciative to be the benefactors of another $10 million endowment gift for IU's student-athletes. The first $10 million gift in June 2005 was historic for us. To be followed up with another gift of this magnitude is overwhelming. His generosity elevates IU Athletics."
Mr. Glaubinger serves on the IU Foundation Board of Directors, the Varsity Club National Board of Directors and the Dean's Advisory Council of the Kelley School of Business. He has received both the Distinguished Alumni Service Award and an honorary degree from IU.
