BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Construction got underway this week on the North End Zone project at Memorial Stadium, with the first major phase of the project kicking off. Crews began work on the utility and foundation package, which will allow construction of the facility to begin in the next few months.
The utility and foundation package involves the setting up of underground utilities and pouring the foundation for the building. The team of Wilhelm Construction began their efforts by tearing down the bottom structure of the north scoreboard. Following the destruction of that structure, excavation began to allow the crews to get the tons of dirt out from the existing hill behind the north end zone.
In addition to removing the dirt from the site, the excavation team of Crider and Crider has removed many rocks that are being used for landscaping around the stadium. Several trees that have been removed have been transplanted at the IU Golf Course, while the remainder have been taken to IU's nursery, and will be replanted at Memorial Stadium when construction is finished.
This phase of construction had to be done outside of football season, as portions of the storm and sanitary system are located 17 feet below the northwest corner of the north end zone. The construction team will have to take up a portion of the north end zone in order to get to the system, and they will be completed with that project by mid-August. The construction team has already been in contact with Sportexe to ensure quick re-installation of that portion of the surface.
The $55 million Facility Enhancement Project will encompass the building of several major facilities, including the North End Zone Facility, Basketball Development Center, Baseball Stadium, Softball Stadium and the Academic Resource Center.
