DAY ONE RECAP
The Indiana University wrestling team sits in 13th place after day one of the 46th Annual Midlands Championships, hosted by Northwestern. Three individual Hoosiers remain in contention heading into day two.
Juniors Matt Coughlin and Nate Everhart highlighted the evening for IU, each reaching the quarterfinals of the championship bracket before suffering their first defeat. Scott Kelly will join them in still competing on Tuesday, vying for a spot on the Midlands stand.
Coughlin, competing at 157 lbs., followed up an opening round bye with a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals. First, Coughlin topped Cleveland State's Corey Carlo, 10-5, before pinning Derek Sickles of Columbia at the 4:58 mark. A 2-7 defeat to third-seeded Michael Chandler (Missouri) then dropped Coughlin into the quarterfinals of the wrestleback where he needs just one more victory to guarantee a top-eight finish.
Everhart took the same route to the wrestleback semifinals; by first advancing to the quarterfinals of the championship draw. The Tinley Park, Ill., native began his day in the heavyweight division with a major decision over Cody Slider of Chattanooga and a 3-2 winner over Rider's Ed Bordas. Following a loss in his next match, Everhart will next take the mat versus former All-American Mike Tamillow. Tamillow finished his wrestling career at Northwestern last season but is competing as a member of the Wildcat Wrestling Club in this event.
Kelly (141 lbs.) took a little longer path than the previous two, but finds himself in the same position at the end of the day; one win away from placing at the Midlands. Kelly arose victorious in his first two contests, picking up back-to-back decisions including a 6-2 triumph over Eric Albright (Pittsburgh) in the first tiebreaker period. He then gave the second-seeded wrestler, Alex Tsirtis of Iowa, all he could handle in a 0-2 tight loss. Kelly bounced right back in the consolation bracket, reeling off two more wins to advance to the quarterfinals. His first match on Tuesday pits him against top-seeded Corey Jantzen of Harvard.
Perry came out on the wrong end of a fall in his first bout, but responded in a big win by earning the `W' in three straight 174-lbs. matches. He tallied a pin and two decisions in that three-match stretch. Perry next faces Kyle Vanderhyde (Olivet) for his slot on the Midlands stand.
Redshirt sophomore Paul Young racked up three victories in the 165-pound draw before making his exit, including two pins and a major decision. Eric Cameron (184 lbs.) and Matt Powless (197 lbs.) also posted multiple wins at the Midlands, each tallying two wins.
Day two of the 2008 Midlands is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EST on Tuesday.
