INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana women's rowing team traveled to Eagle Creek Park on Sunday for the State of Indiana Championships and came in second, behind Notre Dame and ahead of Purdue. The Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight boats logged second place finishes in their respective races to pace the Hoosiers.
In the Varsity Eight race, the Hoosiers battled the 16th ranked Fighting Irish close the whole way but crossed the line with a time of 6:31.0, six seconds behind Notre Dame, while Purdue was over eight seconds behind the Hoosiers on the Eagle Creek course that hosted the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Championships.
The Novice Eight crew also had a good showing on Sunday, trailing Notre Dame at the finish line by two seconds in a time of 6:50.4. The same crews competed last weekend in East Lansing and the Hoosiers fell in that race by nearly 30 seconds.
"I was happy with the performances of the team as a whole," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said. "In particular the top crew, the Varsity Eight, as well as the Novice Eight both made very good improvements over last weekend's racing. We feel we have not yet shown what potential we have to race down the course and I feel this weekend we finally caught a glimpse of that in those two crews."
The Fighting Irish also claimed the top two spots in the Varsity Four event, with Indiana coming in third in a time of 7:37.2. In the Novice Four race, Purdue was nearly 25 seconds faster than the Hoosiers' 8:29.1 to claim first place.
"Up until now, even though we have wanted to win our races," Peterson said, "the races have been more of glorified practices, with specific technical and tactical goals that where supposed to make us faster as we got into this part of the season. Each week we have improved upon those goals and now we are more prepared and faster than we were when the season started a month ago. I know the results this weekend have the athletes confident as we prepare to take on Wisconsin and Iowa next weekend."
The Hoosiers will take on the Badgers and Hawkeyes in Columbus, Ohio next weekend in an important weekend of racing for Indiana.
"Next week is when the racing begins to have real importance," Peterson said, "as we start facing off against more of the other Big Ten programs. How we do next weekend will have a direct impact on how we get seeded going into the Big Ten Championships, and how we fare at the Big Ten Championships will impact our seed at the NCAA Regionals."
