COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Second Varsity Eight crew for Indiana claimed the lone victory on the day at the Big Ten Challenge held on Griggs Reservoir and hosted by the Ohio State University. The Hoosiers raced Iowa in the morning and then turned around and competed against Wisconsin in the afternoon races.
In the morning races, Iowa took the Novice Eight race by besting the Hoosiers time of 7:26.6 by eight seconds and followed it up with a three second win over IU in the Varsity Four race. Then it was the Second Varsity Eight's turn to try to down the Hawkeyes and they did just that, clocking a time of 7:12.2 to beat Iowa by over four seconds. The Varsity Eight race was equally as tight, but it was Iowa's time of 6:54.9 the beat the Hoosiers' time of 6:59.0.
The afternoon races all went in favor of the Wisconsin Badgers, as they won all four races by at least nine seconds. The Varsity Eight for Indiana finished the course in 7:12.0, but it was not enough to beat the Badgers' 7:02.8. The Second Varsity Eight race was almost identical, in terms of difference between the two crews, with Wisconsin again coming out away with the win, 7:12.4 to 7:21.6.
In both the Varsity Four and Novice Eight, Wisconsin pulled away and won by a comfortable margin. Indiana's Varsity Four finished in 8:49.1 while the Novice Eight clocked in at 7:47.6.
Indiana will now take a week off before returning to action at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., on May 3.
