On Friday, April 18th, the IU Varsity Club and IU Athletic Department, in conjunction with the Academic Services department, recognized the 2007-2008 Scholastic Achievement winners in the Memorial Stadium Hoosier Room with a dinner and program. This distinguish group of 23 student athletes earned the highest cumulative grade point averages (GPA) for their respective team. Joining the student athletes to celebrate their accomplishment were their coaches, families, and favorite professors.
The evening's program included remarks from Scott Dolson, director of the Varsity Club, Ron Remak, past president of the Varsity Club Board of Directors, Rick Greenspan, director of athletics, and Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, associate athletic director for development and compliance. This event is a favorite for Calhoun, as it celebrates IU's best and brightest student athletes. Calhoun says, "I am proud of our top scholar athletes and I am confident they will represent themselves and IU well in all future endeavors."
As Calhoun read each recipient's name and major(s), it was clear that this was an exceptional group. Some receipts had won in past years and were being awarded the distinction again. Some were seniors and concluding their time at Indiana University, but leaving with aggressive goals for the future. Others were underclassman and so we will watch with earnest through their remaining semesters to see what they accomplish.
Academic excellence is a cornerstone of Indiana University. The Varsity Club is committed to supporting our student athletes in their quest for scholastic achievement. Because of generous donors, the Varsity Club has been able to award scholarships to deserving student athletes, so that they may reap the benefits of a world-class education. Since 1979, the Varsity Club has recognized one student athlete in each varsity sport for his or her commitment to academic excellence with the Scholastic Achievement Awards. Their names will be added to the Scholastic Achievement plaques on permanent display in the north lobby of Assembly Hall.
