BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- More than 175 Indiana University student-athletes participated in the Varsity Club's Thank-a-thon on Thursday, April 9, in the Basketball Press Room at Assembly Hall. This annual event is an opportunity for student-athletes to express their appreciation for generous donations to support athletic scholarships via phone calls and hand written notes.
Student-athletes participated in two 75-minute sessions. During each session, 32 phones were used, with an additional 50-plus student-athletes writing thank you notes. In total, 879 thank you calls were made and 1,581 notes were written. Of the phone calls made, student-athletes spoke with 369 donors and left 510 appreciation messages for donors.
"I think it's really cool for the donors to get thank you calls from us," said senior softball player, Ashley Hobbs. "It's also great to tell them a little more about softball and spark some new interest in our sport."
In addition to student-athletes, Indiana Director of Athletics Fred Glass and head football coach Bill Lynch also participated in the evening.
"The Thank-a-thon is an excellent opportunity for all of us to connect one-on-one with our valuable donors, said Glass. "It's impossible to reach all of our 6,700 donors in one evening," he added, "but we appreciate the dedication and commitment that all of our Varsity Club donors make to student-athletes."
