OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Indiana Rowing team recorded a successful outing behind its Varsity and Novice 8 crews at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta on April 18-19, in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"We continue to make improvements in each regatta and we raced well this weekend," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "The Varsity 8 crew took bronze in their Grand Final and we were able to gain some ground on a solid Louisville program. Our Second Varsity 8 also made some nice improvements and our Varsity 4 crew did a great job in what was one of their best races all season. Our Novice crews also continue to improve and we'll take this coming weekend off in preparation for what should be a very competitive Big Ten Championships in two weeks."
On Saturday, IU's Novice 8 won its heat with a time of 7:07.00, beating Tulsa (7:16.02), Kansas (7:51.11), West Virginia (7:25.91), Oklahoma (7:03.02) and Louisville (7:51.11) to advance to its final. The Hoosiers Second Varsity 8 also won its Saturday heat with a time of 6:51.50 to advance to the final after defeating No. 17 Louisville who crossed the finish line in 6:54.64, Purdue (7:13.16), Kansas State (7:29.45) and Florida (7:52.27). On Sunday, the Hoosiers won the Varsity 4 Petite Final (8:08.80), defeating Georgia Tech (2nd, 8:14.70), Emory (3rd, 8:18.90), Washington University (4th, 8:22.60), Tennessee (5th, 8:32.50) and West Virginia (6th, 8:43.90).
In the Varsity 8 Grand Final, the Hoosiers finished third to win a bronze medal with a time of 7:00.00, behind Louisville (1st, 6:47.80) and Grand Valley (2nd, 6:54.80). IU defeated Kansas State (4th, 7:01.30), Purdue (5th, 7:04.70) and Kansas (6th, 7:10.10).
Due to a last minute change to the regatta schedule, Indiana's Second Varsity 8 and Novice 8 crews didn't get the opportunity to race in their Grand Finals but easily won with unofficial times in the Petite Finals for each race.
After a weekend off, the Hoosiers will compete in the 2009 Big Ten Rowing Championships on Saturday, May 2, in Columbus, Ohio.
