BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-More than 250 attended the Tailgate Tour kick off event in Bloomington at the DeVault Alumni Center on Tuesday, May 12. The event featured remarks by four head coaches: Tom Crean (men's basketball), Sherry Dunbar (volleyball), Felisha Legette-Jack (women's basketball), and Bill Lynch (football), and athletic director Fred Glass.
IU's head coaches thanked fans for their support this past season and encouraged them to come out to support IU Athletics at upcoming sporting events, beginning with baseball's final regular season series this weekend and continuing with fall sports later this year.
"It's an interesting year for Indiana Football," said head football coach Bill Lynch. "We're celebrating 125 years of Indiana Football this year." He added that it's also a new beginning. "It's basically a new stadium, a new experience, and we certainly want you to be a part of it."
The coaches also provided additional details on the two new IU Athletics facilities currently under construction, the North End Facility at Memorial Stadium and the new Basketball Development Center.
"I look across the street every day and I see the North End Zone Project," said head volleyball coach Sherry Dunbar. "For me that is the `wow factor' in getting recruits to come here. When they walk in, they're going to see one of the largest weight rooms in the entire country. They are going to see one of the most first-class academic centers that every student-athlete is going to be able to use. And I am so excited."
The North End Zone Facility will be completed this summer and IU Football will begin its 2009 season from inside the new facility. This new Basketball Development Center will serve as the daily headquarters for the men's and women's basketball programs and is scheduled for completion in December.
The Tailgate Tour's kickoff event was sponsored by the IU Varsity Club, I Association and the Monroe County Chapter of the IU Alumni Association. The emcee for the event was long-time voice of the Hoosiers Don Fischer and introductions were made by Kay Terkhorn, president of the Bloomington Varsity Club Board. Proceeds from event will benefit IU's student-athletes.
The Tailgate Tour will make six more stops in Evansville, Jeffersonville, Fort Wayne, Merrillville, Jasper, and end in Indianapolis on August 26.
