Hoosiers Post Big Win Over Kentucky, 156-129

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's swimming and diving team improved to a perfect 2-0 in dual meets with a 156-129 win over Kentucky Saturday morning at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Led by a strong opening 50-yard backstroke from Taylor Wohrley the IU A team of Wohrley, Allysa Vavra, Brittany Barwegen and Sara Delay took first in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:43.96. In third at 1:46.22 was the group of Ashley Jones, Ashley Specht, Kim Tracey and Christina Gonzalez.
Competing in their second meet in as many days, the Hoosiers went with a different lineup in the 1,000 freestyle. Brittany Strumbel, normally a 200 free swimmer, went out to a quick lead and never looked back with a winning time of 10:13.65. Sara Delay was second in 10:25.74, with Courey Schaefer third (10:26.04).
Jones took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.22, while Nikki White was third in 1:52.90. Lindsay Vrooman put up a fourth-place finish with her time of 1:54.12.
Wohrley had a body-length lead after 50 yards in the 100-yard backstroke and earned her second win on the weekend with a time of 55.51. Brenna MacLean was third at 58.82, 3/100ths of a second behind second-place finisher Meg Eppler of Kentucky.
Vavra picked up her first win of the year in the 100 breaststroke with a mark of 1:04.21. Ashley Specht placed second (1:05.06) and Bronwyn Pasloski fourth (1:05.72).
It was Barwegen's second win this weekend in the 200 butterfly (2:00.42). Vrooman took second in 2:06.67, and Maclean rounded out the IU sweep in 2:07.81.
Wohrley raced to the wall in 24.12 to finish second in the 50-yard freestyle, while Strumbel placed fourth with a time of 24.33.
Delay paced the Hoosiers in the 100 freestyle with a second-place finish (52.41), while Strumbel was fifth (52.79).
Wohrley recorded her first win of the season in the 200 backstroke and second victory of the day with a time of 2:01.81. Jones was second (2:03.75) and Tracey fourth (2:05.16).
Vavra's second win of the morning and second win of the season in the 200 breaststroke resulted in a time of 2:17.70. Pasloski took second (2:20.38) and Katelyn Ishee third (2:22.66) with Brittney Phelan fourth (2:24.26).
After a false start in the men's 200 breaststroke the women's 500 free start was pushed up and Nikki White paced the Indiana 1-2-3 finish with her time of 4:57.28. Vrooman was at 5:00.01 and Schaefer 5:01.23.
Barwegen took the lead in the final 50 yards of the 100 butterfly to win in 54.99, her second win of the day. Tracey was third (57.45) and Maclean fifth (58.68).
Gabby Agostino took her second-straight title in the women's 3-meter diving with a score of 345.53. Amy Cozad was the runner-up with 279.83 points, while newcomer Kate Hillman was fourth (273.60).
Vavra staked herself a large lead in the breaststroke leg and finished strong for a win in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.73. Jones was second in 2:05.84 and Tracey fourth (2:08.19).
Indiana capped off its team victory with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay as Strumbel, Delay, Stephanie Armstrong and Schaefer clocked a time of 3:28.81.
Brittany Feldman made her first IU appearance since the 2008-09 season and was victorious with a score of 312.83 on the 1-meter springboard. Agostino took third (282.45) and Cassidy Kahn fourth (273.15).
The Hoosiers are back at the CBAC next Friday and Saturday when they play host to Michigan and Texas in a double dual meet. The meet will take place in three sessions beginning at noon on Friday. The teams will also swim at 6 p.m. Friday night and 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
