BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Wrestling held the 2010 Cream and Crimson Intra-Squad scrimmage Wednesday night inside Assembly Hall. A pair of true freshmen notched wins while upperclassmen Matt Ortega, Paul Young, Eric Cameron and Matt Powless rolled to convincing victories.
The night began with one of those previously-mentioned true freshmen, Zach Zimmer earning a 4-2 decision over redshirt freshman Justin Brooks. Zimmer broke a 2-2 tie late in the second period on a reversal before riding out Brooks for the entire third period.
At 133 pounds, Matt Ortega tallied a trio of takedowns before sticking freshman Brian St. James with 10 seconds remaining in period number two. Ortega's pin was the lone fall of the evening, and one of four matches to end in bonus points.
The third bout of the competition pitted true freshman Mitchell Richey versus redshirt sophomore Geno Capezio. Richey added 1:04 worth of riding time to his takedown and escape for a 4-0 decision in the 141-pound match.
Another true freshman, Sawyer Morris, battled three-time NCAA Qualifier and seventh-ranked Kurt Kinser in the 149-lbs. showdown. The score was knotted at 2-2 late in the second period before Kinser worked for a takedown on the edge of the mat as time expired in the period. The senior then added another takedown and over three minutes of riding time advantage for an 8-3 decision.
Also dropping down a weight class this year is Kinser's fellow Bloomington H.S. South graduate, Paul Young. Young's first test at 157-lbs. was sophomore Ryan Konz, and Young passed with flying colors. He compiled five takedowns en route to a 12-3 major decision.
Next up was the 165-pound contest, featuring redshirt freshman Ryan LeBlanc and true freshman Preston Keiffer. LeBlanc, coming off a 20-2 redshirt season a year ago, recorded the only takedown of the match and grinded his way to a 3-2 decision.
In almost an identical match, senior Nick Avery did the same against true freshman Cheney Dale at 184 pounds. Avery grabbed the lone takedown in the second stanza and held on for a 3-2 decision.
Redshirt senior Eric Cameron cruised to a 17-2 tech fall, ending with 32 ticks left in the second period. The two-time NCAA Qualifier was able to turn his opponent twice for near-fall points. Cameron also snagged five takedowns in the triumph.
Matt Powless kept the bonus points coming at 197 lbs., putting on a takedown clinic the final frame. Leading 6-2 heading into the third period, Powless went to work with five takedowns in the final period alone, resulting in a 17-6 major decision.
Heavyweight was the tightest match of the evening, requiring a second overtime period to decide a winner. Senior Ricky Alcala, a transfer from UC-Davis, faced off against junior Joe Fagiano. Neither grappler could record a takedown in the stalemate until the final seven seconds of overtime period number two when Fagiano fired in for a successful counter-shot to secure the match-winning takedown.
The Cream and Crimson officially get the 2010-11 season started on November 13 when the team heads to East Lansing for the Michigan State Open.
