CLEMSON, S.C. - The Indiana rowing team opened the spring slate with several successful performances at the Clemson Sprints on Saturday, March 20, on Lake Hartzell in Clemson, S.C. The Hoosiers battled No. 12 Clemson, Alabama, Marist and Purdue in a series of 2,000-meter pieces.
"Going down to Clemson, our big thing was transferring our experience from the ERG's to the water since we have had limited time on the water, so I wanted them to be really aggressive," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Both of our Varsity 8's did just that. The second Varsity led the race for about the first 1,000 meters, before Clemson took the end. The first Varsity was in contact with them for 1,500 meters, which is great. With limited water time, this was fantastic. We have room to grow from the technical standpoint, but we're really, really excited about how everything went today."
IU's first Varsity 8 crew, made up of sophomore coxswain Alex Burkle, sophomore Shifumi Terasaka, sophomore Cara Donley, sophomore Andrea Wensits, junior Ellie Benson, junior Rachel Anderson, senior Katie Liston, senior Katie Feckler and senior Emily Kasavana, came in a close to second to Clemson in the first Varsity 8 race with a time of 6:49.66, defeating Purdue, Alabama and Marist. The Tigers won the race in 6:44.15, with Purdue finishing in third (6:53.83), Alabama in fourth (7:07.62) and Marist in fifth (7:27.27).
The Hoosiers' second Varsity 8, made up of junior coxswain Amy Coleman, senior Nicole Coton, sophomore Jaclyn Riedel, sophomore Jennifer Schultz, sophomore Rachel Griffin, freshman Claire Robinson, freshman Madelyn Shields, freshman Kaitlin Honson and sophomore Amy Gartenberg, also finished second to Clemson with a 7:02.41 and in front of Alabama by nearly six seconds. The Tigers took first in 6:51.61, while Alabama finished in third 7:08.50, Purdue in fourth (7:24.69) and Marist in fifth (7:29.00).
"My crew is pretty young with just one senior leading the boat and mostly freshmen and sophomores, so they are very excited about their performance today," said assistant coach Conny Kirsch. "They did a really nice job. We're doing the right thing and we're trying to bundle all of that for the next races. They are really excited to get the season going."
Indiana's first Novice 8 crew finished third in 7:16.48, just behind Alabama in 7:13.92 and race winner Clemson (7:02.93). Purdue took fourth in 7:39.78 and Marist finished in fifth (7:59.53). The Hoosiers also posted two crews in the Varsity 4 and second Novice 8. In the Varsity 4, IU's `A' crew placed fourth in 8:20.40, behind a trio of Clemson crews (`A'-7:43.51, `B'-7:57.13, `C'-8:07.64). IU's `B' crew finished in 8:35.30, followed by Purdue's Novice 4 crew in 9:12.74. In the second Novice 8, the Hoosiers placed third in 7:56.15, behind Alabama (7:40.00) and Purdue (7:56.15).
Indiana returns to action on Sunday, March 28, when it takes on Notre Dame, Purdue, Buffalo and Eastern Michigan in the Indiana Invitational in Indianapolis.
