BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team sits in first place after day one of the second annual Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon at Riddle Point Park in Bloomington. The Hoosiers currently have 40 points with Boston University and Central Florida tied for second with 27 points apiece. Miami is currently in third with 11 points and Dayton is in fourth with nine points.
The Dale England Cup consists of a series of head-to-head, 2,000-meter pieces, on a warm and sunny day in Bloomington. IU's first Varsity 8 crew, made up of sophomore coxswain Alex Burkle, sophomores Shifumi Terasaka, Cara Donley and Andrea Wensits, juniors Ellie Benson and Rachel Anderson, and seniors Katie Liston, Katie Feckler and Emily Kasavana, beat Miami by a little more than five seconds with a time of 7:04.1. The Hurricanes crossed the finish line in 7:09.43.
"I'm really excited about the first day of racing, most importantly because of the way the crews executed," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "It was a little challenging because of the wind, but the water was flat. Anytime we have a change in conditions like that, the crews have to adapt with their rowing and rhythm, and I thought we handled that very well. I'm really happy with how the Varsity 8 competed. Their start wasn't as good as what they have done, so we talked about a couple of different things that they are going to work on tomorrow. I'm really happy how they were able to regroup and adapt in the second 500 meters and were able to finish strong in the end of the race."
In the second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers topped Dayton by more than six seconds with a tie of 7:23.7. The Flyers finished in 7:30.21.
In the first Novice 8 race, Indiana handedly beat Miami with a time of 7:29.1 to the Hurricanes 8:17.2. Central Florida topped IU in the second Novice 8 race with a time of 8:04.87. The Hoosiers crossed the finish line in 8:39.09. Indiana's crew in the first Varsity 4 race finished in 8:27.5, beating Dayton by nearly 12 seconds as the Flyers crossed the finish line in 8:39.09.
Day two of the Dale England Cup begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. ET with the first Novice 8 race. The awards ceremony with the presentation of the Cup will be held at 2 p.m. at Riddle Point Park.
