Opell Stands Out at European Meet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Hoosier All-American Aaron Opell posted five stand-out performances at the Povoa de Varzim International Meet last week in Portugal.
Opell toppled the listed meet record in the 400-meter individual medley with a winning time of 4:25.14. That was just one of four individual victories for Opell. The reigning Big Ten Champion in the 200-yard breaststroke, Opell was a winner in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:17.73. He also won the 100-meter breaststroke (1:03.95) and 50-meter breaststroke (29.29). In his fifth event he also took third in the 200-meter individual medley (2:05.94).
Currently his time in the 400 IM ranks sixth in the world, while his time in the 50 breaststroke ranks 13th. He also has the 14th-fastest time in the world this year in the 200 IM, 15th in the 200 breaststroke and 21st in the 100 breaststroke.
