INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Indiana Rowing team swept both Varsity 8 races and won the Novice 8 race in a series of 2,000-meter pieces against Notre Dame, Purdue and Eastern Michigan on Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis on Sunday, March 27.
IU's first Varsity 8 crew beat Notre Dame (6:29.0) by a full second in 6:28.0, while handedly beating Purdue (6:46.9) and Eastern Michigan (7:25.0).
"Going into it, obviously Notre Dame has had the edge on us year-to-year and we've gotten closer and closer," said head coach Steve Peterson. "In the Varsity 8 race, we got out in front of Notre Dame, but throughout the race they were making moves to challenge us and our kids kept fighting them off. In the last 500 meters, it got a little closer than I would have liked, but we were able to hold on."
The Second Varsity 8 crew finished more than five seconds ahead of Notre Dame (6:37.8) to win their race in 6:32.0, with Purdue coming in third in 7:08.8.
"In the second Varsity 8, through the first 500 meters, we just powered through everyone and moved away for a fairly convincing win," Peterson said.
Indiana's first Novice 8 crew dominated much like the Varsity 8 boats, beating Notre Dame (7:39.6) by more than 17 seconds with a time of 7:22.0. Purdue took third in 7:42.5. The second Novice 8 crew finished in 7:57.2, behind Purdue (7:40.0).
"With the first Varsity, we're still working on understanding our pace," added Peterson. "With the second Varsity, we just need to work on getting out of the blocks better, but overall we're reaching our goals. Our Novice 8 crew had some issues with about 250 meters to go, but they were able to keep a big advantage. Overall, it was a great day for our big boats."
IU's Varsity 4 boats also competed, with the first 4 finishing in 8:09.6, behind Notre Dame's `A' crew (7:56.0), beating out Notre Dame `B' (8:14.8) by five seconds. Purdue (7:42.6) and Eastern Michigan (9:18.5) rounded out fourth and fifth places, respectively. IU's second 4 clocked a time of 7:45.0, just behind Notre Dame `A' (7:37.4), and beating Notre Dame `B' (7:48.9) by three seconds.
The Hoosiers return to action April 1-2, when they play host to Boston University, Gonzaga and Michigan State in the third annual Dale England Cup at Lake Lemon in Bloomington. Racing begins on Friday, April 1, at 4 p.m. ET, with Saturday's racing starting at 8:30 a.m. Admission and parking for the Dale England Cup is free.
