COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana rowing team recorded a successful outing at Double Duals, hosted by Ohio State on the Scioto River at Griggs Reservoir in Columbus. IU's first Novice 8 and second Varsity 8 crews swept its races, while the Hoosiers' top Varsity 8 crew beat Iowa and missed Louisville by one second.
"Today's racing was great," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Obviously, the standouts were the second Varsity 8 and the Novice 8. Both did a great job, beating Iowa, Louisville, Bucknell and Rhode Island. Anytime we can come in and come away with victories is good. The first Varsity 8 did a good job taking down Iowa. This definitely puts us in the thick of things in the Big Ten."
Indiana's first Novice 8 crew beat Iowa (7:06.7) in its first race by five seconds with a time of 7:01.9. In the afternoon session, it finished in 7:21.9, beating out Louisville (7:30.4) by nine seconds. In the morning second Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers topped Iowa (6:56.2) by three seconds with a time of 6:53.0, while Rhode Island finished in third with a time of 6:56.9. IU then beat out Bucknell (7:06.8) by one second, crossing the finish line in 7:05.2, with Louisville finishing in 7:08.2. In the morning first Varsity 8 race, the Hoosiers topped Iowa (6:52.2) by four seconds with a time of 6:48.6, while Rhode Island finished in 7:06.1. In the afternoon race, IU started out strong but came up just one second short to Louisville (7:02.5) with a time of 7:03.6, while beating Bucknell (7:16.8) by 14 seconds.
"Against Louisville, we put together great 1,750-meters of racing," added Peterson. "We had a good start and put ourselves up in a position to win. To Louisville's credit, they rowed very aggressively and we couldn't respond and they got in the last two or three strokes to beat us. We went into this wanting to beat everyone so I'm a little disappointed, but coming up short by one second isn't anything to complain about. We're happy that we have put together the majority of our race, which is pretty solid and now we just need to finish that last 250-meters."
IU's first Varsity 4 crew finished in 7:52.7 in the morning session, just behind Iowa (7:39.9) and Rhode Island (7:45.8). In the afternoon session, the Hoosiers finished in 8:04.1, beating Bucknell (8:05.4) by one second, while Louisville finished first in 7:55.3. In the second Novice 8 races, IU finished in 7:23.9 in the morning race, behind Ohio State (7:20.5) and Iowa (7:22.7). In the afternoon session, Indiana crossed the finish line in 7:59.4, behind Iowa (7:41.5) and Ohio State (7:41.8).
The Hoosiers will now travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on Oklahoma, Buffalo and Grand Valley on Saturday, April 16.
