BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Despite the absence of their top wrestler, the Indiana Hoosiers came up just seconds away from upsetting #13 Nebraska Friday night inside University Gym. Indiana fell, 23-17, as third-ranked Matt Powless sat out with an injury.
Four Hoosiers were victorious on the night, including heavyweight Adam Chalfant's 3-2 decision over #8 Tucker Lane in the final bout of the evening. Additional winners were Zach Zimmer, Matt Ortega and #20 Taylor Walsh.
Zimmer put IU on top in the opening bout, topping Shawn Nagel in an 8-2 winner. The Cornhusker earned the first two points with a first-period takedown before falling victim to eight unanswered points by Zimmer to close it out.
After a Nebraska decision at 133 pounds momentarily tied the team score, Hoosier senior Matt Ortega posted the 25th pin of his career. The four-time New Mexico state champion built up an 11-3 lead early in the second period. He then ended things early and secured six team points with a fall at the 4:10 mark.
Taylor Walsh kept the bonus points flowing in the subsequent bout, blasting Brandon Wilbourn en route to a 15-0 blanking. Walsh racked up 14 points through two periods before spending the final frame attempting a throw from the neutral position in hopes of nabbing a sixth team point. He cumulated more than four minutes of riding time in the first five minutes of the match.
Even with a major decision for the Huskers at 157 pounds, Indiana took a 14-7 lead heading into intermission.
Nebraska came out firing after the break, taking the next five bouts; painfully culminating with a 4-3 second tiebreaker decision determined by a 19-second riding time advantage.
Adam Chalfant made sure to end the night on a high note, however, recording a 3-2 triumph over #8 Tucker Lane. Chalfant's takedown in the second period proved to be the difference in his besting of the three-time NCAA qualifier.
