Ground was officially broken on Monday, May 7th for IU’s new baseball and softball stadiums. The site, located on the north edge of IU’s athletic campus near the 45/46 Bypass, is currently being cleared with construction anticipated to begin soon.
The architect for the two stadiums is Indianapolis based Browning, Day, Mullins and Dierdorf. Construction of the facilities has been awarded to Gilbane Construction. Construction will continue through 2012 and is expected to be complete in March 2013, prior to the 2013-2014 baseball and softball seasons.
The IU Board of Trustees officially approved construction of a new baseball and softball complex in August 2011 (Read announcement.). The new $19.8 million complex will replace Sembower Field and the IU Softball Field (located on Fee Lane).
Highlights of the new stadiums include new locker rooms and dugouts, indoor and outdoor hitting cages, turf fields, press boxes, scoreboards, lighting and sound systems, and hospitality suites. The complex will also feature ample parking, entry plazas, picnic areas, concessions and restrooms for fans.
IU’s new baseball stadium will be officially named Bart Kaufman Field in honor of a major from Kaufman, a former IU baseball student-athlete and chairman and CEO of Indianapolis-area Kaufman Financial Corp. (Read the Kaufman announcement).
Major naming and gift opportunities are still available for the softball stadium and other facilities as part of the overall complex.
