Social media websites like Facebook and Twitter are popular communication channels for prospects and college student-athletes. However, boosters, donors and fans should not use social networking websites to contact prospective student-athletes in an effort to connect with these recruits or convince them to come to IU. Some examples of impermissible recruiting activities include:
- Posting on prospects' Facebook wall.
- Commenting on prospects' photos or activity.
- Posting your own pictures of prospects.
- Sending private messages or email to prospects.
- Tweeting "at" recruits using the "@" Twitter feature.
- Mentioning prospective student-athletes or their visits to campus in your Twitter posts or Facebook statuses.
- Directly messaging recruits or chatting with them online.
As a representative of IU, please do not use social networking outlets to discuss IU or attempt to persuade a prospect to attend the university. It is impermissible as representative of the university to discuss or encourage a prospect's attendance to any university, so please use your social networking sites with care when posting about IU. These activities can lead to potential violations of NCAA regulations and possibly hamper our recruiting efforts with these specific prospects.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Briana Fields, Director of Compliance at 812-856-2094 or brifield@indiana.edu, or visit our compliance website.
