DALLAS, Texas - The Indiana University women's swimming team sits in second place with 153.5 points, just 4.5 points behind leader USC after day one of the SMU Classic in Dallas, Texas.
The two-day event which features eight swimmers each from USC, Indiana, North Carolina, Louisville, SMU and Miami, concludes Saturday night.
Indiana opened with a win in the 400 medley relay as Brooklynn Snodgrass, Bronwyn Pasloski, Gia Dalesandro and Kait Flederbach went 3:36.43, an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Dorina Szekeres came in third in the 400 individual medley at 4:12.74 (NCAA B cut), with Dalesandro ninth overall (4:22.66).
Lindsay Vrooman took second in the 200 freestyle at 1:47.62, 1/100th of a second bedhind winner Chelsea Chenault of USC. However, it was Haley Lips in the B final that blew away the field, clocking a 1:46.05. Both Vrooman and Lips posted NCAA provisional times.
Flederbach was the third-place finisher in the 50 freestyle (23.07), and Cynthia Pammett tied for eighth (23.56). Dalesandro was IU's top butterflier and second overall (53.35-NCAA B cut), with Lips 10th (55.53).
Snodgrass had nearly a full second on the field in the 100 backstroke, winning in 53.18, an NCAA B cut. Pammett was eighth in 55.17. Pasloski took the field in the 100 breaststroke, winning in a time of 1:00.85, which puts her on the NCAA provisional list. Szekeres came in ninth (1:06.25).
In the final event of the night, Vrooman, Lips, Pammett and Snodgrass were second in the 800 free relay, posting an NCAA B cut of 7:09.25.
