The 2013-14 Indiana University Athletics season has begun! Cross Country, Field Hockey, Football, Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Volleyball are now weeks into practice and competition and all remaining teams will begin workouts as early as today, the first day of classes. All student-athletes, coaches and staff share the same goal – to build on the tremendous successes of last year both in the classroom and on the field.
Without your generous donations and support, our student-athletes would not have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels, or have the full Indiana University experience. We want to thank you for your continued financial support as well as assistance and adherence to NCAA, Big Ten, and Indiana University regulations. Again this year, the Indiana University Compliance Office will be providing educational information to you through the Hoosier Scene newsletter in a continued effort to ensure IU is playing by the rules.
In your role as a Varsity Club member, there are additional responsibilities on your shoulders in the form of restrictions from the NCAA, which means that certain actions, however inadvertent, could potentially jeopardize the eligibility of a prospective or current student-athlete.
As a Varsity Club member, it is important to remember the following three restrictions:
- You may not contact potential recruits by in-person, by phone, or in writing in order to help recruit them to Indiana University;
- You may not have arranged in-person on or off-campus contact with recruits. This includes contact at tailgates or other IU sporting events; and
- You may not provide benefits (meals, transportation, loans, or other tangible items) to prospective student-athletes or student-athletes that are not readily available to the general student population.
There are many other applicable rules and guidelines, but keeping these three important restrictions in mind as we start the year is important. As with all rules and regulations, there are many situations that arise in which the rules may not be clear. In all cases, please do not hesitate to contact the compliance office with questions. Please know we're always here and available to answer any questions you may have.
We appreciate your willingness to help us abide by NCAA regulations. Thank you for your support in helping Indiana University play by the rules! Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Briana Fields, Director of Compliance at 812-856-2094 or brifield@indiana.edu, or visit our compliance website.
