BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana men's basketball team defeated Texas Southern on Monday, 83-64. Freshman Robert Johnson led all scorers with 21 points, six assists and five rebounds.The Hoosiers (2-0) had four players reach double-figures, including Johnson, Kevin Yogi Ferrell (20), James Blackmon Jr. (19) and Hanner-Mosquera Perea (12).
Johnson, who recorded 17 points in the first half, connected on his first of three three-pointers to open up the contest. As a team, the Hoosiers shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the three-point stripe.
Sparked by a trey from Nick Zeisloft, Indiana went on a 10-1 run to take a 16-13 lead with 11:43 remaining in the opening period. Zeisloft finished the game with six points and six rebounds.
Two minutes later, another Johnson triple began a 21-4 run by the Hoosiers. Mosquera-Perea scored six straight points in that stretch to guide Indiana to a 44-29 halftime lead.
Blackmon, who knocked in 17 of his points in the second period, opened the half scoring 11 of Indiana's first 15 points to lead the Hoosiers to a 66-40 advantage with 13:47 remaining in the game.
The Hoosiers sealed the victory with a 13-3 run late in the second half, including nine points from Ferrell.
On the defensive side, Indiana held Texas Southern to 31.3 (5-of-16) percent shooting from the three-point line. Mosquera-Perea (5) and Collin Hartman (3) both set career records for blocks.
The game marked the first visit back to Assembly Hall for Texas Southern Head Coach Mike Davis, who coached Indiana from 2000-06 and led the Hoosiers to a 2002 NCAA National Championship appearance.Indiana welcomes No. 22/23 SMU on Thursday. Tip-off is at 8 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.
