BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Happy Holidays from the Indiana University Athletics Compliance Office! As we head full-swing into the holiday season, please keep in mind the following NCAA rules as they relate to student-athletes, extra benefits, and preferential treatment.
Holiday Cards: It is permissible to send your favorite IU student-athlete(s) a holiday card. As a reminder, the holiday card, in itself is permissible; however it is not permissible to also include with the card any items of value, such as gift cards, cash, or other gifts. If you would like to send cards to IU student-athletes, the IU Compliance Office asks that you send them to the student-athlete’s coaching staff to deliver them to the student-athlete.
Holiday Meals: On occasion, it is permissible to provide a student-athlete with a meal at your house or on-campus. Should you wish to provide a meal to a student-athlete, please work with the IU Compliance Office to complete the Occasional Meal Approval Form prior to the scheduled meal.
Employment: It is permissible to employ student-athletes on a temporary, part-time, or full-time basis all year round provided student-athletes are paid a rate consistent with the duties performed and only paid for work actually completed. Please contact the IU Compliance Office for additional information and pre-approval prior to hiring a student-athlete.
Holiday/Birthday/Graduation Gifts: It is NOT permissible to purchase student-athletes or former student-athletes gifts of any kind. Doing so would be a violation of NCAA extra benefit legislation and could impact the student-athlete’s remaining eligibility.
Housing and Travel: It is NOT permissible to provide housing or transportation expenses to student-athletes at any point, including during vacation periods. If you know of student-athletes in need of housing or transportation arrangements during the holiday break, please notify the student-athlete’s coaches and/or the IU Compliance Office. Doing so would be a violation of NCAA extra benefit legislation and could impact the student-athlete’s remaining eligibility.
Should you have specific questions regarding any matters involving a student-athlete, please do not hesitate to contact the IU Athletics Compliance Office (iucomply@indiana.edu). Thank you for your continued support of IU Athletics and helping us play by the rules.
