BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Varsity Club announced its 2014 student-athlete Scholastic Achievement winners.
The Scholastic Achievement Award was established in 1979 by the IU Varsity Club to honor and acknowledge the academic excellence of one student-athlete every year in each of IU's 24 varsity sports. The award recognizes the athlete that attains the highest cumulative grade point average on his or her respective team.
Those honored by the Scholastic Achievement Award must meet the following criteria: complete a minimum of four undergraduate semesters (at least two at Indiana University); compete in at least one intercollegiate contest at IU; and earn a minimum 3.0 GPA for the fall semester.
An additional award is also granted each year to the Student Athletic Board member with the highest grade point average.
Mark Murphy (football) and Rebecca Dreher (soccer) also received the 2014 Jack D. Tichenor Award. This award was established in 1984 as a tribute to Tichenor, Bloomington publishing company owner, businessman, and entrepreneur. Awarded annually, the Jack D. Tichenor Award honors top male and female athletes who hold the highest individual grade point average (GPA) among all varsity sports.
The Scholastic Achievement and Tichenor Award recipients will be honored at halftime during the Men's Basketball vs. Penn State game on Wednesday, February 12.
These student-athletes' names will also added to plaques on permanent display in the north lobby of Assembly Hall and inside the D. Ames Shuel Academic Center.
