Student-Athletes Honored for Academic Excellence

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Recently the Indiana University Athletic Department honored those student-athletes who achieved a 4.0 GPA during the spring semester, with the annual Academic Excellence Dinner.
The dinner was held at Finch's Brasserie downtown and made possible by Steve and Kathy Shuel, who hosted the event.
The honorees included 25 student-athletes from 15 sports that earned a 4.0. Of the group there were nine first time winners, eight two-time winners, four three-time winners and three student-athletes who have earned this honor more than four times.
"The definition of student-athlete can mean many things to many people, but on a night like tonight, I believe that we are experiencing the definition in its purest form," Director of Athletics Fred Glass said. "Not only are these ladies and gentlemen going above and beyond in the classroom with 4.0s, double-majors and graduate school accomplishments, but they are winning championships, competing internationally and carrying Olympic hopes. In addition, they are SAAC Reps, peer mentors, and team captains who embody the Spirit of Indiana and will continue to carry that torch both within the department and with them wherever they go from here. We would like to thank Steve and Kathy Shuel for offering the opportunity to shine a light on these young people tonight and for their continued support of Indiana University student-athletes."
