An alumnus of Jenison High School near Grand Rapids, Michigan, Nicole Redder spent four seasons playing for the Hoosiers from 2008-11. During her career she scored 182 goals, grabbed 224 steals, and tallied 98 assists. Her 182 goals are good for sixth on the all-time Indiana list and the 224 steals puts her at fifth in a career at IU.
Throughout Redder's time at Indiana, she received many academic awards. She was named ACWPC (Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches) and CWPA (College Water Polo Association) All-Academic Teams all four years (2008-11). Nicole was also a member of the Academic All-Big Ten Team from 2009-11. Redder earned CWPA All-Division in 2009 and 2010, as well as being named to the All-Eastern Championship First Team in 2010.
In her senior season, after winning the CWPA Championship, the Hoosier water polo team qualified for the NCAA Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan and finished in fifth place.
We caught up with Redder recently to look back on her career and also catch up with her life after graduation. Here's what she had to say:
What are some of your best memories of your time at Indiana, whether it is with Water Polo or not?
REDDER: "I have so many great memories: travelling the country for tournaments, swimming the test sets at practice, spending time with teammates and friends, making it to Nationals, using sign language at practice, doing an entire practice with a weight belt, and football games. There was never a dull moment. I loved every second of it."
Is there one game or moment in particular that sticks out for you?
REDDER: "Winning the CWPA Eastern Championship against Michigan my senior year at home to make it to Nationals. The celebration in the pool after the win was amazing; even some of the fans came down to jump in the water!'
How did playing water polo at Indiana help you prepare for life after college?
REDDER: "It taught me time management, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, and discipline."
What are you doing now in terms of occupation, where do you live, family?
REDDER: "I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I am working as the assistant aquatics director at a high school."
Do you keep in contact with any of your teammates from your time at Indiana?
REDDER: "Yes, of course!"
Did you have a favorite "spot" on campus that you liked to go while you were here?
REDDER: "Chocolate Moose."
