BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Did you know that an estimated $4 Billion will be wagered on Super Bowl XLIX?
With Super Bowl Sunday only a few days away, please be reminded that the NCAA, the Big Ten Conference, and Indiana University strictly prohibit athletic department staff members and student-athletes from engaging in gambling activities as they relate to amateur, intercollegiate or professional sporting events. The following Q&A will help clarify the NCAA sports wagering guidelines for student-athletes, athletics department staff, and donors:

A wager is defined as placing something of value at risk (cash, meals, or other tangible items) with the opportunity to win something of value in return.
What is the scope of the gambling and wagering prohibition?
NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes, and athletics department, conference office, and NCAA national office employees from wagering on amateur, intercollegiate, and professional sports in which the Association conducts championships.
Do these restrictions apply to Varsity Club donors?
No. While these restrictions do not specifically apply to representatives of the athletic department, it is not permissible for a booster to place a bet or accept a wager on the behalf of a student-athlete or staff member.
What types of gambling and wagering activities are prohibited by student-athletes and athletics department staff?
- Participating in sports wagering events where there are admittance fees (i.e. Fantasy Football or March Madness office pools) and where cash or items of value are awarded to the winner.
- Providing any information to any individual involved in wagering on intercollegiate athletics.
- Placing a bet on amateur, college or professional sporting events in which the NCAA conducts championships.
- Accepting a bet that involves any team representing IU.
- Soliciting or accepting a bet on any amateur, intercollegiate, or professional competition for any items of value (i.e. cash, shirt)
- Agreeing to influence the outcome of an intercollegiate competition whether it be by agreeing to throw or fix a competition, or offering any knowledge relating to the teams or competition.
